New Delhi: A notable shift is taking shape in Bihar’s political sphere as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, begins stepping into active politics—putting to rest the long-standing doubts about his intentions. For years, Nishant deliberately maintained a low profile, keeping himself away from political controversies and refraining from commenting on governance or party-related matters. Now, however, his recent appearances and public remarks strongly indicate that he is ready to take on responsibilities within the Janata Dal (United).
His emerging assertiveness was on full display during his recent response to the ongoing Voter Rights Yatra in Bihar. Taking a firm stand against the opposition, Nishant alleged that they were “only trying to mislead the public by spreading baseless rumours,” while assuring people that the Chief Minister was “perfectly healthy, fully fit, and working tirelessly.” Observers of state politics see Nishant’s growing involvement as a noteworthy shift, particularly because many had assumed he would continue to stay distant from politics despite his family background. His new willingness to speak on issues of importance is widely being regarded as the first clear step toward assuming a more decisive role in Bihar’s political landscape.
Insiders within the JDU reveal that Nishant is almost certain to make his formal entry in the upcoming Assembly elections, slated for October–November this year. A senior functionary of the party told The Sunday Guardian that Nishant is being groomed as a leader who embodies the legacy, discipline, and administrative skills of his father, Nitish Kumar. He is expected to contest the elections from the Harnaut constituency in Nalanda district—or from a nearby seat in the region.
When asked about Nishant’s possible role after the elections, JDU spokesperson Neeraj Kumar responded, “It depends entirely on Nitish Kumar whom he trusts and entrusts with responsibility. As party workers, we will stand by his decision, since he is our supreme leader.”
Political analysts argue that Nishant’s entry could provide renewed energy to the JDU, solidify Nitish Kumar’s legacy, and pave the way for a smoother transfer of leadership within the party. Many believe that his carefully timed interventions are part of a larger, well-thought-out strategy aimed at preparing for generational transition. One political observer commented, “Nishant demonstrates leadership qualities, and under Nitish Kumar’s guidance, he has the potential to emerge as a key political figure in the years to come.”
