Youth from Jammu Caught in Russia-Ukraine Warzone; Family Appeals for Help

JAMMU: A youth from Jammu’s Khour area has been trapped in the Russia–Ukraine warzone after being misled with promises of employment and forced to fight for the Russian Army. The family of 23-year-old Sachin Khajuria from Pahariwala village in Akhnoor is in distress and has appealed to the Union government for urgent intervention.

Sachin left for Russia on a study visa in August 2025. However, soon after arrival, he and others were allegedly asked to sign documents in Russian—promised jobs as porters—but were instead pushed into weapon training camps and later deployed to the frontline against Ukrainian forces.

“We last spoke to my son two days ago. He said he will not be in contact once they advance into Ukrainian territory. He was promised porter’s work, not fighting,” said Banarsi Lal, father of Sachin, urging the government to ensure his safe return.

His mother, Swarno Devi, broke down while speaking, saying Sachin had spoken to her eight days back but never revealed the truth, fearing it would affect her health. “I beg the Government of India to bring my son back alive,” she said.

Sachin’s brother, Bikas Khajuria, claimed that his passport has been seized by the Russian Army, leaving no chance of escape. “One youth from Rajasthan resisted being sent to the warzone. The troops pointed guns at him. My brother is trapped the same way,” he said.

The matter has reached the political corridors as well. NC Minister Satish Sharma, BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma, and BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma have written to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, seeking immediate intervention for the repatriation of Sachin and other Indians trapped in similar circumstances.

The case has highlighted how unsuspecting youth are being lured with false promises of education and non-combat work, only to be thrown into the dangerous warfront. Families in Jammu now wait anxiously, hoping the government can secure the safe return of their children from a foreign battlefield.
