Srinagar: In a major boost to women’s cricket in Kashmir, renowned ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) coach and IHPL umpire Mel Juniper visited Showkat Ali Stadium Baramulla and officiated a match of the ongoing Gen Bipin Rawat Memorial Kashmir Women’s Premier League (KWPL). His presence added prestige to the tournament and served as an inspiration to the young Kashmiri women participating.
Mel Juniper, who has been associated with several international and franchise leagues globally, interacted with players, shared coaching tips, and praised the talent, temperament, and passion displayed by the local athletes. “The energy and raw potential I’ve seen in these Kashmiri girls is remarkable. With proper grooming, some of them can go on to play at the national level,” he said.
The international coach highlighted the importance of exposure, regular tournaments, and professional mentoring to unlock the hidden talent in the Valley. His visit was facilitated by the Indian Army and Baramulla Cricket Forum as part of KWPL’s broader mission to bring global attention to grassroots women’s cricket in Kashmir.
Several players expressed their excitement at receiving guidance from a coach of Juniper’s calibre. “It’s like a dream to be playing in front of someone who’s coached at that level. His encouragement has given us a huge morale boost,” said a young player from Anantnag Women’s XI.
Juniper’s involvement underscores KWPL’s commitment to not just competition, but growth, visibility, and genuine empowerment for women in Kashmir through sport. His presence symbolized global recognition of the talent brewing in the region a testament to how far women’s cricket in the Valley has come.
