Srinagar: Leader of Opposition and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Sunil Sharma launched a scathing attack on the Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday, accusing it of neglecting flood victims in Jammu and shielding corruption in major departments.
Speaking to reporters outside the Legislative Assembly after staging a walkout, Sharma said that the government has shown “utter insensitivity” toward people affected by recent floods across several districts in the Jammu region. He alleged that despite widespread destruction and hardship faced by the affected families, no serious relief measures had been taken.
“Not even a single senior minister has visited the flood-hit areas. There is no proper rehabilitation, no compensation. The victims are suffering while the government is busy with politics,” Sharma said.
The BJP leader also demanded an immediate and time-bound investigation into what he described as large-scale corruption in the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Mining Department. He alleged that contracts were being awarded arbitrarily and funds meant for public infrastructure were being misused.
“These departments have become dens of corruption. Tenders are manipulated, rules are flouted, and there is no transparency in the process. We demand an independent probe,” he said.
Sharma further accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of violating the Model Code of Conduct by announcing the opening of a Law College in Ompora, Budgam, during an ongoing election process. “This is nothing but an attempt to influence voters. The Election Commission must take strict note,” he asserted.
Earlier in the day, BJP legislators disrupted the Assembly session, pressing for an adjournment motion over the recent floods. When the Speaker disallowed the motion, the BJP MLAs protested vocally, leading to their walkout.
Sharma concluded by saying that BJP would continue raising public issues inside and outside the House until the government is held accountable.
