Tinsukia police have arrested six persons in connection with a huma-trafficking racket in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday.
The accused has been identified as- Dipak Phukan, Umakanta Chetri, Boby Deori Sona, Rohit Khadal, Peter Sabashi and Ajit Munda.
According to sources, Dipak Pukan was nabbed by the villagers of Duarmara Singpo village on Wednesday (Nov 5) under Pengeri police station when he came to take away two minors from the nearby tea estate.
The villagers handed over Dipak Phukan to Pengeri police. Following the revelation of Dipak, police arrested Umakanta, Boby, Rohit, Peter and Ajit connection with the case.
A case no 28/2025 U/S 143(5)/3 (5) BNS registered at Pengeri police station.
The main accused Peter Sona has been absconding.
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt to nab Peter.
Sources said the human-traffickers has been targeting the small children of the tea gardens of upper Assam.
“Most of the human-trafficking cases has been reported from Doomdooma area of Tinsukia. The human-trafficking has been thriving in tea gadens areas. The traffickers are targeting the poor tea garden workers,” said a source.
He said, “The childrens of tea garden were trafficked and they were taken to Arunachal Pradesh for household work. Their is a huge labour crisis in Arunachal Pradesh,”.
“Most of the time, we have rescued the childrens from Arunachal Pradesh. Their is a big racket thriving in tea gardens areas of upper Assam. Most of the middle man are neighbours linked to human-trafficking network,” said a police source.
