Srinagar: After weeks of an extended dry spell, the Kashmir Valley has finally received its first major snowfall of the season, bringing much-needed relief and joy to both tourists and the struggling tourism sector. Since last evening, higher reaches including Gulmarg, Sonmarg, and Pahalgam have been blanketed in snow, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland.

According to the Meteorological Department, snowfall is expected to continue over the next 24 hours, accompanied by rainfall in the plains. The onset also marks the beginning of Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period known for sub-zero temperatures and frequent snow.

Tourist hotspots such as Gulmarg have already started seeing increased footfall, as visitors from across the country flock to enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and the scenic beauty of Kashmir in winter. Tour operators and hoteliers many of whom had been suffering due to low bookings since the April Pahalgam attack say this snow has brought them new hope.

“We had almost given up. But this snowfall might revive the season,” said a tour operator in Pahalgam.

A local shopkeeper in Srinagar echoed similar sentiments: “The Pahalgam attack didn’t just harm people, it hit our livelihood. We earn because tourists come here. Now that snow has arrived, we hope they return in good numbers.”

The administration has issued travel advisories and begun snow clearance operations to ensure safe travel. Stakeholders believe this snowfall could be the turning point for reviving Kashmir’s image as a safe and serene tourist destination.

As white carpets roll across the Valley, locals remain hopeful that this winter will not just bring snow but renewed economic warmth and peace.
