Russian Oil Trade: In the US-India relationship, trade and geopolitics have clashed, an old fault line has been reopened by US President Donald Trump’s renewed warning about tariffs, which links trade penalties to India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil. The comments are made at a delicate time when diplomatic messaging is already strained due to previous claims and counterclaims and negotiations are still in progress.

PM Modi-Trump Call

Although no fresh details of a direct call were officially disclosed, Trump’s public references to Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggest recent communication or at least an assumed understanding between the two leaders. Trump portrayed Modi as someone aware of Washington’s displeasure, framing the relationship in personal terms. New Delhi, however, has stayed measured, avoiding public commentary that could escalate rhetoric or personalise a policy driven dispute.

India’s Russian Oil Imports & Tariff Hike By Trump

India’s purchase of Russian crude has been a central grievance for the Trump camp. In August 2025, this issue was used to justify doubling tariffs on Indian imports to 50% with a move that sent a clear signal of economic pressure. The latest warning hints that tariffs remain a lever Trump is willing to pull again if he believes India has not adjusted its energy sourcing.

Trump Makes U-Turn After Saying PM Modi Assured Him of No Russian Oil Buy

Trump’s current stance contrasts sharply with his earlier assertion that Modi had promised to stop buying Russian oil. That claim was swiftly rejected by India, which stated that no such assurance was ever given. The shift from confidence to confrontation raises questions about whether the earlier statement was a misunderstanding, a negotiating tactic or political theatre.

India’s Consistent Position on Russian Oil Purchases

Throughout the controversy, India’s position has remained steady. Officials have stressed that energy decisions are shaped by market conditions and domestic needs with Russia offering reliable supply at competitive prices, New Delhi argues that its choices are economic, not ideological and cannot be dictated by external pressure without consequences for consumers.

Conflicting Claims & Diplomatic Friction

The gap between Trump’s public remarks and India’s official responses has created friction. Conflicting narratives have complicated trust, even as both sides continue to speak of friendship and a special relationship. Such contradictions risk turning policy disagreements into credibility issues if left unresolved.
