Srinagar: A high alert has been sounded across Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Republic Day as security forces step up surveillance and area domination exercises to ensure a peaceful and incident-free celebration on January 26.

In the run-up to the national event, Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with CRPF and other security agencies, have intensified security arrangements across the Valley. Multiple new checkpoints have been established on key highways stretching from north to south Kashmir. These are being manned round-the-clock to monitor movement and prevent any potential threats.

In Srinagar, joint teams of J&K Police and paramilitary forces conducted extensive searches at various houseboats docked along the Jhelum river. These operations come on the heels of similar checks at hotels, guest houses, and homestays across Kashmir, including key tourist hubs and local residential areas.

Officials said the focus of these searches is two-fold: to prevent the use of accommodations by anti-national elements and to ensure compliance with registration and safety norms. Several establishments found violating rules have been fined, and preventive actions have been initiated.

“Searches and inspections are being carried out in a coordinated manner to tighten the security grid in urban and rural areas alike,” a senior police official said. “All arrangements are in place to ensure public safety, and any suspicious activity will be dealt with firmly.”

Night patrolling has also been intensified in sensitive zones, while drones and CCTV surveillance are being actively used to monitor crowded public spaces.

The security forces have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and order in the region, with special focus on protecting soft targets and critical infrastructure during the run-up to Republic Day.
