The Supreme Court of India on January 15 rejected the petition filed by the producers of the Tamil film Jana Nayagan, starring actor-politician Vijay, seeking clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
A bench led by Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Augustine George Masih said it would not hear the matter, noting that the Madras High Court’s Division Bench is already scheduled to consider the case on January 20.

The dispute between the makers of Jana Nayagan and the CBFC reached the Supreme Court after the film, initially set for release on January 9, was delayed due to the board withholding its censor certificate. Following this sudden development, the production company KVN Productions filed a petition with the Madras High Court.
Justice PT Asha of the Madras High Court had earlier ordered the CBFC to issue a U/A certificate after the filmmakers made the 27 modifications requested by the board. However, the CBFC filed an appeal, citing an internal complaint, leading to further delays.
With the Madras High Court scheduled to hear the matter on January 20, the producers then approached the Supreme Court, which declined to intervene today.

Jana Nayagan is directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions. The film features Vijay in the lead role, with co-stars Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, and Bobby Deol. It was initially planned for release on January 9, coinciding with the Pongal festival, and is being widely described as Vijay’s farewell film before entering politics and contesting in the Tamil Nadu elections under the TVK banner.
CBFC’s Legal Moved to Madras High Court
On January 9, the CBFC also moved the Madras High Court to challenge an earlier order directing the board to issue a U/A 16+ certificate. The board requested that the film’s certification be reviewed by a revising committee.
After considering the appeal, the Madras High Court ordered that Jana Nayagan should not be released before January 21, effectively putting a temporary hold on the film. This has delayed the release plans, leaving fans eagerly awaiting updates.
