Midfielder Pape Gueye scored the winner in the 94th minute after Morocco’s Brahim Diaz had earlier missed a stoppage-time penalty, following a 14-minute delay triggered by Senegal’s walk-off. Coach Pape Bouna Thiaw ordered his players off the field, before captain Sadio Mane convinced them to return. The penalty had been awarded after a VAR review by Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala, who ruled that Senegal full back El Hadji Malick Diouf had pulled Diaz down while defending a corner. Tensions flared as officials and players argued around the touchline monitor and again when Senegal temporarily left the field. When play resumed, Diaz attempted a Panenka-style penalty that was easily saved by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Senegal went on to secure the title in extra time, though the dramatic finale was seen as a blemish on an otherwise successful tournament, while Morocco’s wait for a second AFCON crown stretched beyond 50 years.
