They cheated until the end of the match but we were going to win. What just happened is divine. Stealing and creating a scenario as if it were a Netflix series is crazy. An African Cup is not a Netflix series. It's really ugly for them now. They thought that because they opened the competition, they would close it? No, we win."   8. (SOUNDBITE) (Wolof) SENEGAL SUPPORTER, MODOU YACINE DIOP, SAYING:       "We really needed to win. This team showed me courage and seriousness, we gave everything we had. We really thank Sadio Mané, he gave us everything."   9. SUPPORTERS CELEBRATING ON TOP OF VEHICLES   10. MORE SUPPORTERS CELEBRATING   11. (SOUNDBITE) (Wolof) SENEGAL SUPPORTER, EL HADJ NDIAYE, SAYING:       "This referee should really be punished. In football there are rules. There were yellow cards he let pass when he should have given them to Morocco. And he didn't do it of course. This referee was not mentally well. Either he was manipulated or he was corrupted. That's what we noticed. But we are happy."   12. SUPPORTERS CELEBRATING AT DAKAR'S CORNICHE OUEST / TRAFFIC WITH SUPPORTERS CELEBRATING   13. (SOUNDBITE) (Wolof) SENEGAL SUPPORTER, IDRISSA DIALLO, SAYING:       "There was too much cheating, but when Sadio Mané did not accept that our players leave the competition, that really helped Senegal. We would have had problems if we had left. But really Sadio Mané did everything for us to stay, we endured and God rewarded us, we are very happy."   14. TRAFFIC JAM AT DAKAR'S COASTAL ROAD CORNICHE OUEST WITH SENEGALESE SUPPORTERS CELEBRATING   STORY: Senegal stormed off the pitch in protest at a late penalty awarded against them before returning to beat hosts Morocco 1–0 after extra time to win the Africa Cup of Nations in a final overshadowed by chaotic scenes on Sunday (January 18). Midfielder Pape Gueye scored the winner in the 94th minute after Morocco’s Brahim Diaz had earlier missed a stoppage-time penalty, following a 14-minute delay triggered by Senegal’s walk-off. Coach Pape Bouna Thiaw ordered his players off the field, before captain Sadio Mane convinced them to return. The penalty had been awarded after a VAR review by Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala, who ruled that Senegal full back El Hadji Malick Diouf had pulled Diaz down while defending a corner. Tensions flared as officials and players argued around the touchline monitor and again when Senegal temporarily left the field. When play resumed, Diaz attempted a Panenka-style penalty that was easily saved by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Senegal went on to secure the title in extra time, though the dramatic finale was seen as a blemish on an otherwise successful tournament, while Morocco’s wait for a second AFCON crown stretched beyond 50 years.
