US President Donald Trump wrote a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressing his displeasure over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, despite his claim that he ended eight wars worldwide.

In the letter, Trump linked the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize to his renewed threats over Greenland, stating that he no longer felt obligated to think “purely of peace” and suggesting the possible annexation of the Arctic territory.

The US president also questioned Denmark’s “right of ownership” over Greenland. Notably, the Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded by the Norwegian government but by an independent committee appointed by the Norwegian Parliament.

What does the letter from the US president say?

In the letter addressed to the Norwegian prime minister, Trump wrote, “Dear Jonas: Considering your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped eight wars plus, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.”

Trump went on to allege that Denmark is incapable of protecting Greenland from Russia and China. He further questioned Copenhagen’s ownership of the island, claiming there were “no written documents” supporting Denmark’s claim and arguing that its ownership stemmed merely from a boat landing there centuries ago, adding that Americans had also landed boats there.

The US president concluded the letter by stating, “I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now NATO should do something for the United States. The world is not secure unless we have complete and total control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT.”

What does the Nobel Peace Prize committee say?

On 16 January 2026, the Nobel Peace Prize committee said that “the Nobel Prize and the laureate are inseparable,” after Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado presented her Peace Prize medal to Trump. The committee clarified that even if a medal or diploma changes possession, it does not alter who was officially awarded the prize.

In a follow-up statement on 18 January, the committee added that “a prize can therefore not, even symbolically, be passed on or further distributed.”

What did Donald Trump say on social media?

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had saved millions of lives and claimed that the rebuilding of the US military under his leadership restored global deterrence.

“The only nation that China and Russia fear and respect is the rebuilt USA,” he wrote, once again criticising NATO allies for what he described as years of inadequate defence spending before his intervention.
