Republic Day 2026 Special: India’s national flag, the Tricolour, is not just a fabric, It connects the millions of people with one nation and make a one nationality that binds every citizen into a thread of patriotism. The unforgotten history of Republic day began from colonial rule to freedom through sacrifice, struggle, and hope. Every year, this flag becomes the heart of national celebrations on two special days August 15 (Independence Day) and January 26 (Republic Day).

But here’s something many people don’t realize: the way we honour the flag on these two days is different, and there are meaningful reasons behind it.

On Independence Day, the Prime Minister hoists the flag at the Red Fort, marking the moment India became free. On Republic Day, the President unfurls the flag at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, celebrating the day our Constitution came into force. These traditions are not random. They are deeply connected to history, symbolism, and national pride. As India prepares for its 77th Republic Day on January 26, 2026, it’s the perfect time to understand the meaning behind these rituals.

Republic Day Is More Than Just a Parade

For many, Republic Day means a grand parade, colourful tableaux, and an impressive flypast. But beyond the spectacle lie important traditions and details that reflect India’s identity. One such detail is the precise timing of the ceremony and the correct method of raising the flag. According to constitutional rules and official protocol, August 15 and January 26 follow different procedures and even different terminology.

Why 10:30 AM Is So Important to Unfurl Flag on Republic Day

The Republic Day ceremony follows a carefully planned schedule. The time 10:30 AM is chosen so the President’s ceremonial convoy can travel smoothly from Rashtrapati Bhavan to Kartavya Path.

This timing also has historic importance. On January 26, 1950, India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, took oath at 10:24 AM. Around 10:30 AM, India was declared a sovereign democratic republic, and the national flag was unfurled for the first time. Today’s ceremony honours that very moment in history.

Here’s how the morning unfolds:

  • 10:25 AM: Prime Minister and chief guests arrive.

  • 10:30 AM: The President unfurls the Tricolour as the national anthem plays.

  • 10:31 AM: A 21-gun salute signals the start of the parade.

  • 10:32 AM: The Parade Commander asks permission to begin the march-past.

Another practical reason? By 10:30 AM, the winter fog in Delhi usually clears, ensuring better visibility for the flypast and for cameras broadcasting the event worldwide.

Hoisting vs Unfurling: The Difference

Many people say “flag hoisting” on Republic Day, but that’s technically incorrect.

  • August 15 – Flag Hoisting: The flag is pulled from the bottom to the top of the pole. This symbolizes the rise of a newly independent nation.

  • January 26 – Flag Unfurling: The flag is already tied at the top. The President simply pulls the rope to unfold it. In Hindi, this is called “Jhanda Phahrana.” It shows that India is already free and is now celebrating its Constitution.

The President’s Role on Republic Day

Republic Day celebrations begin at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The President, as India’s first citizen and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, travels in a ceremonial vehicle to Kartavya Path. Considering the protocol and formalities, 10:30 AM fits perfectly.

Starting at this time also means the event ends by around 12:00–12:30 PM, offering ideal daylight for photography, television coverage, and global broadcasts.

Why the President Unfurl Flag on Republic Day, Not the Prime Minister?

People often wonder why the President performs the ceremony on Republic Day. The answer lies in their roles.

On Independence Day, the Prime Minister, as the political head, hoists the flag. But Republic Day marks the enforcement of the Constitution, and the President is the constitutional head of the nation. That’s why the honour belongs to the President on January 26.

Chief Guests and Theme for Republic Day Parade 2026

For Republic Day 2026, leaders of the European Union are the chief guests, highlighting India’s growing presence on the global stage. The parade theme, “150 Years of Vande Mataram,” beautifully blends modern defense strength including advanced missiles with traditional cultural performances and music. It’s a rare mix of heritage and innovation that reflects today’s India.

In the end, Republic Day is not just about what we see on the road or on TV. It’s about understanding the history, symbolism, and respect behind every moment when the Tricolour rises and the anthem echoes across the nation. 🇮🇳
