Republic Day 2026: The United States marked India’s 77th Republic Day with a special message that highlighted the strong and long-standing relationship between the two nations. President Donald Trump described the connection as a “historic bond” between the two democracies.

India celebrated Republic Day on Monday, remembering January 26, 1950 — the day the Indian Constitution came into force. This historic moment officially shaped India into the world’s largest democracy.

Donald Trump Highlights ‘Historic Bond’ Between Democracies

In his official message, President Donald Trump congratulated India and praised the shared democratic values of both countries. He said, “On behalf of the people of the United States, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the government and people of India as you celebrate your 77th Republic Day. The United States and India share a historic bond as the world’s oldest and largest democracies,”.

The US Embassy in India shared his greetings in a post on X.

US Ambassador Attends Republic Day Parade

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also sent warm wishes. He attended the Republic Day Parade for the first time and called it a proud moment. He noted that the sight of US-made aircraft flying over India symbolised the deepening defence and strategic ties between the two nations.

In his post on X, he wrote, “Happy Republic Day, India! Honored to attend the Republic Day Parade for the first time, a celebration of India’s Constitution and democratic spirit. Thrilled to see the U.S.-made aircraft soaring in the Indian sky, a powerful symbol of the strength of the U.S.-India strategic partnership.”

US–India Relations Face Trade Tensions

Despite strong diplomatic ties, relations between India and the United States have faced some difficulties over the past year. A key issue has been tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on Indian imports. There were also warnings about increasing duties related to India’s purchase of Russian oil.

India Calls US Tariffs ‘Unjustified’

India has strongly opposed the tariff decisions. The government said the US measures were unfair and that it would take steps to protect its national interests. In its first reaction to the tariffs announced in August last year, India said the “targeting” was unjustified and unreasonable. It also stated that, like any major economy, India would take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.

This exchange of Republic Day greetings shows the importance of US–India relations, even as both countries manage trade and policy differences.
