Surajkund International Crafts Mela’s inaugural weekend was marred by a startling double swing collapse on Saturday evening that left one person dead and more than a dozen injured. Viral videos capturing the moment the “Giant Swing” broke mid-air have sparked nationwide alarm and a high-level investigation.
What Exactly Happened in the Surajkund Swing Tragedy?
The incident happened at the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela site on Saturday at approximately 6:15 PM. A large amusement swing, carrying 19 people, was in rapid motion when one of its main support chains suddenly snapped. This left the entire structure dangling precariously 2-3 feet off the ground at one end. As police, security personnel, and shopkeepers rushed to rescue the stranded riders, a second, catastrophic failure occurred.

Who Were the Victims and How Did Inspector Jagdish Die?
The entire swing structure fell to the ground in the subsequent second collapse, trapping a number of individuals underneath. Among the 13 injured, Inspector Jagdish Prasad, the security in-charge for the swing area, sustained critical injuries while engaged in the rescue effort. He was pronounced dead at a private hospital. Seven other victims are reported to be seriously injured. The family of the deceased inspector in Faridabad is still alive.

An FIR will be filed against the swing operator, according to Faridabad Deputy Commissioner Ayush Sinha, who has also ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed deep sorrow, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the accident. I extend my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.” State Tourism Minister Dr. Arvind Sharma assured that better treatment is being provided to all the injured and that the government is standing with the affected families.

How Did the Fair’s Atmosphere Change After the Accident?
The vibrant atmosphere of the crowded weekend fair turned to chaos and panic following the accident. The festive music echoing through the grounds was replaced by the screams and shouts of the crowd, leading to a temporary stampede-like situation. Authorities quickly barricaded the swing court and had the throng under control in 15 minutes, however many families elected to leave the fairgrounds as a precaution.
