GASSER GIVING THUMBS UP TO CAMERA STORY: Team USA edged the final of the Team Figure Skating at the Milano Cortina Games on Sunday (February 8) to cap a thrilling team competition, where home team Italy captured bronze. With the U.S. and Japan tied going into the men's free skate, 21-year-old Ilia Malinin was not at his best but was still good enough to lead the U.S. to a second successive Olympic team title. Malinin had been expected to perform seven quads in his free skate but ended up attempting only five, and even those were not flawless as he stumbled out of his quad Lutz. He turned two planned quads – including the quad Axel – into triples. But he salvaged his programme with a huge quad toeloop followed up by a quad Salchow, both in combinations. His score of 200.03 was almost 40 points less than his season's best but still good enough to defeat Japan's Shun Sato, who went after Malinin but was unable to match his rival's technical ability. The U.S. finished with 69 points, one more than Japan, while Italy took bronze with 60 points. Staying in Milan, Czech Republic eased to victory over Finland to earn their first Group A in the Olympic women's ice hockey tournament on Sunday, with goals from Tereza Pistekova and Natalie Mlynkova securing a 2-0 win. Finland and the Czech Republic had difficult starts to the Games. The Czechs lost their opener 5-1 to the U.S. followed by a 4-3 shootout loss to Switzerland, whilst Finland's first match was postponed after four of their roster tested positive for norovirus and they lost 5-0 to the U.S. on Saturday. The U.S. top Group A with six points after two games, with the Czechs two points behind in second. Champions Canada are on three points after one game, Switzerland have two points and the Finns have yet to earn a point. All five sides will advance to the last eight, where their seedings will depend on the final placings in the preliminary round. Over in Livigno, Zoi Sadowski-Synnott of New Zealand topped the Women's Big Air Snowboard qualifiers, from Japan's Kokomo Murase and GB's Mia Brookes, as defending Olympic champion, Austria's Anna Gasser, also secured progression in the twelve for Monday's medal contest. The event was held at night with the course lit by floodlights, and features riders launching off a jump and performing an aerial trick involving flips, spins and twists in various directions. Gasser claimed gold in the event in 2018 and 2022, and ranked ninth in Sunday's qualifiers. (Production: Joseph Andrews)
