Salim Khan Health Update: Screenwriter & Salman Khan’s father Salim Khan has had a minor brain haemorrhage, a doctor treating him at Lilavati Hospital confirmed yesterday, a day after he was admitted. Reports also indicate that he has been put on ventilator support as doctors closely monitor his condition.
Earlier, there were reports that Salim Khan was admitted to the hospital after being diagnosed with a blood clot and severe dizziness. Reportedly his blood pressure suddenly increased, causing internal bleeding on the right side of his brain.
About Brain Haemorrhage
A brain hemorrhage, also known as a brain bleed or intracranial hemorrhage, is a medical emergency and a serious type of stroke. A brain hemorrhage occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, causing blood to accumulate in or around the brain. This blood damages brain tissue and raises pressure in the brain, which can become a life-threatening emergency if not treated promptly.
Sufferers of a brain hemorrhage will usually experience sudden and severe symptoms. The most common symptom of a brain hemorrhage is a severe headache, often described as the “worst headache of your life.” Other symptoms may include weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, vomiting, vision changes, confusion, or trouble speaking or understanding speech. Due to the rapid progression of this condition, prompt medical attention is essential.
Symptoms of a Brain Hemorrhage
The symptoms can suddenly occur and will depend on the area where the bleeding is taking place and how severe it is. Some of the symptoms include:
- Sudden and severe headache
- Sudden weakness, numbness, or paralysis, particularly on one side of the body
- Difficulty speaking, slurred words, or inability to understand speech
- Blurred vision, double vision, or loss of eyesight
- Loss of balance, coordination, or sudden dizziness
- Severe symptoms such as seizures, vomiting, severe drowsiness, or loss of consciousness
Types of Brain Hemorrhage
Doctors also categorize brain hemorrhages depending on the location where the bleeding takes place:
- Intracerebral hemorrhage: Bleeding that takes place in the brain tissue
- Intraventricular hemorrhage: Bleeding that takes place in the fluid-filled cavities of the brain (ventricles)
- Subarachnoid hemorrhage: Bleeding that takes place between the brain and its thin membrane
- Subdural or epidural hematoma: Bleeding that takes place between the protective covering of the brain and the skull
How Doctors Diagnose Brain Hemorrhage
To confirm a brain bleed, doctors rely on urgent imaging tests, including:
- CT scan: This is the fastest and most common method of checking for bleeding in the brain
- MRI scan: This scan gives detailed images of the extent of the damage
- Angiography: This is used to check for aneurysms or irregular blood vessels that may have led to the bleeding in the brain
Brain Hemorrhage Treatment Options
Treatment focuses on stopping the bleeding, reducing pressure in the brain, and preventing further injury. Depending on the severity, care may include:
- Medications for managing blood pressure, reducing swelling in the brain, and preventing seizures
- Surgery for draining accumulated blood, repairing damaged blood vessels, or relieving pressure in the brain
- Rehabilitation therapy, such as physical, occupational, or speech therapy, for patients to help them regain lost functions
Causes and Prevention of Brain Hemorrhage
The most common reasons for a brain hemorrhage are injuries to the brain, high blood pressure, aneurysms, blood disorders, and substance abuse.
- To prevent this condition, one should:
- Control blood pressure
- Avoid smoking and drug abuse
- Treat aneurysms promptly
- Use helmets and seatbelts to prevent injuries to the brain
- Not take blood-thinning or other medications without consulting a doctor
- A hemorrhage in the brain is a serious medical condition, but prompt attention and treatment can be lifesaving.
