Pakistan Blast: A massive gas explosion ripped through an apartment building in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest port city, on Thursday. At least 16 people, including women and children, lost their lives, while several others were injured after part of the building collapsed, according to police and rescue officials.
Explosion Occurs During Pre-Dawn Ramadan Meal
The blast happened early in the morning as residents were preparing a pre-dawn meal on the first day of Ramadan in a residential area of Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, said local police chief Rizwan Patel. Rescue teams are continuing to clear rubble in search of survivors trapped under the debris.
Death Toll Rises as Rescue Efforts Continue
Initially, the number of fatalities was reported as 13, but three more bodies were recovered, raising the death toll to 16. Police and emergency services are working tirelessly to ensure that no one remains trapped in the collapsed structure.
President Zardari Condoles and Orders Safety Measures
Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He directed authorities to provide the best medical care to the injured and called for swift completion of rescue operations. The President also urged the Sindh provincial government to enforce building codes, check gas cylinder safety, and conduct a thorough investigation to prevent future incidents.
Gas Safety Concerns in Karachi Homes
In Karachi and across Pakistan, most homes rely on natural gas for cooking, but many also use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders due to low gas pressure. Improper handling or faulty cylinders can lead to catastrophic accidents.
Previous Gas Explosions in Pakistan Highlight Risks
This is not the first deadly gas accident in the country. In July 2025, a gas explosion at a wedding reception in Islamabad killed eight people, including the bride and groom. Authorities have warned that gas safety remains a critical issue for residential and public buildings.
