Chandigarh: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced the approval of Rs 1,463.95 crore for the construction of a six lane, access controlled greenfield spur in Punjab.
In a post on X, Gadkari said the proposed corridor will link the Ambala Chandigarh section of NH 205A with the Zirakpur Bypass. He clarified that while the project will support traffic movement across the tricity region, it is a separate infrastructure initiative and not the Tricity Ring Road itself.
The new spur is expected to divert through traffic away from key junctions in Mohali, Chandigarh and Panchkula, reducing congestion that frequently spills over into Punjab’s urban stretches. Officials said the project will ease pressure on NH 44, NH 205A and NH 152, which carry heavy passenger and commercial traffic.
With an access controlled design, the six lane stretch will allow smoother and faster vehicular movement. It is also expected to improve connectivity towards Himachal Pradesh, particularly the Shimla region, cutting travel time for commuters and transporters.
The project is being seen as a major step towards strengthening Punjab’s highway network while simultaneously helping decongest adjoining urban centres. Once operational, it is likely to streamline regional traffic flow and support economic activity across the northern belt.
