Terror Alert in Delhi Today: Security agencies have placed the national capital on high alert after receiving intelligence inputs about a possible terror attack. The warning points to a plot by the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which may be planning to target crowded religious and heritage sites in Old Delhi.
The alert has raised concerns due to the dense population and heavy daily footfall in these areas.
IED Attack Feared Near Red Fort and Chandni Chowk Temples
According to the reports accessed by India Today, an intelligence note suggests that terrorists could attempt an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in and around the Red Fort and nearby temples.
These locations are situated in Chandni Chowk, one of the busiest and most crowded parts of the capital, making them highly sensitive targets.
Plot Linked to Islamabad Mosque Blast
According to intelligence agencies, the suspected terror plan is believed to be a retaliatory move following a blast at a mosque in Islamabad on February 6. Officials believe LeT operatives may be attempting to carry out a major strike in India as part of this response. Agencies have also cautioned that prominent temples across India could continue to face threat alerts in the coming days.
Security Tightened Across Old Delhi
After receiving the intelligence inputs, Delhi Police and central security forces have significantly increased surveillance in sensitive areas, especially in Old Delhi.
Additional security personnel have been deployed, vehicle checks have been intensified, and anti-sabotage inspections are being carried out near religious places and tourist landmarks to prevent any untoward incident.
Reminder of Deadly Red Fort Car Bombing in 2025
The latest alert comes nearly three months after the November 10, 2025 car bombing near the Red Fort, one of the most devastating terror attacks in Delhi in recent years.
In that incident, an explosives-laden Hyundai i20 detonated near the Red Fort Metro Station, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 20 others. The explosion also set several nearby vehicles on fire. Investigators later confirmed the use of ammonium nitrate-based explosives.
Identity of Suicide Bomber and Wider Terror Network
Probe agencies identified the driver of the vehicle as Umar Mohammad alias Umar Un Nabi, a doctor linked to Al-Falah University in Faridabad.
DNA tests conducted on human remains recovered from the blast site confirmed that Umar was inside the vehicle at the time of the explosion. Investigators later connected him to a larger terror module operating in neighbouring Haryana.
Explosives Seizure and Premature Detonation Theory
According to investigators quoted in television reports, the bombing took place just hours after security agencies recovered around 2,900 kg of explosives in Faridabad. Several key members of the terror module were also arrested, including individuals identified as Dr Muzammil and Dr Adil Rather.
Sources suggested that Umar may have detonated the vehicle prematurely near the Red Fort due to increasing pressure from the security crackdown on the network.
Agencies Remain on High Alert
With fresh intelligence pointing to possible attacks, security forces remain on maximum alert. Authorities continue to monitor movements closely and have urged vigilance as preventive measures are strengthened across the capital.
