Hollywood fans around the world are mourning the loss of beloved actor Eric Dane, who passed away at the age of 53 following a courageous fight with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. The Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria star died on February 19, 2026, surrounded by loved ones after a nearly year-long battle with the illness that gradually robbed him of his physical strength but never dimmed his spirit.

Iconic Career and Public Advocacy for ALS Awareness

Eric Dane first became a household name as the charismatic plastic surgeon Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on ABC’s hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. His breakthrough role won him a global fanbase and established him as one of television’s most memorable characters. He later shone as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria, and also appeared in The Last Ship, X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, and other notable projects.

In April 2025, Dane made his ALS diagnosis public, bravely discussing the disease’s impact on his life and career. Despite the devastating prognosis, he continued to work. He became an outspoken advocate for ALS research and awareness, speaking at events, meeting lawmakers, and pushing for better support for those affected.

What is ALS, and how does it affect Eric Dane?

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rare condition that destroys nerve cells controlling voluntary muscles. Over time, it causes increasing weakness, difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing. Most patients live only a few years after diagnosis, making Dane’s openness and advocacy all the more impactful.

During his battle with the illness, Dane used his platform to raise awareness. He addressed health insurance challenges for patients, met with lawmakers in Washington, and received accolades from the ALS Network as a passionate advocate for change.

Emotional Final Words Shared in Netflix’s Famous Last Words

In a deeply personal and posthumously released episode of Netflix’s Famous Last Words, the actor delivered a moving message to his two daughters, Billie (15) and Georgia (14). From the interview filmed in late 2025, Dane shared four key life lessons with them in his own voice:

“First, live now. Right now. In the present.… The past contains regrets. The future remains unknown. So you have to live now. The present is all you have. Treasure it. Cherish every moment.”

“Second, fall in love… Find your passion, your joy… Find something that excites you. Find your path, your purpose, your dream. Then go for it. Really go for it.”

“Third, choose your friends wisely.”

“Fourth, fight with every ounce of your being, and with dignity… This disease is slowly taking my body, but it will never take my spirit.”

He concluded with a tender message, “Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words.”

Legacy of Love, Courage, and Family

Dane’s family confirmed his passing in a statement that emphasized his devotion to his daughters and his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, who stood by him throughout his illness. Although they had separated in 2018, Gayheart became his primary caregiver during his final months, a testament to their enduring bond.

Friends of the actor have also launched a GoFundMe effort to support his daughters, honoring Dane’s legacy of compassion and care while helping secure their future after this heartbreaking loss.
