Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Saturday responded to the recent United States Supreme Court ruling that struck down the reciprocal tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump. Joshi confirmed that the Indian government will study the ruling before making a statement.

Commerce Ministry and MEA to Decide India’s Reaction

Addressing the media, Joshi clarified that he is not the person who is supposed to give a reaction at this point. He stated that the issue would be examined by the concerned authorities, and the reaction would be given by either the Commerce Ministry or the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

He told the media, “I have seen in the media that the US top court has given some judgment and the Indian government will study that, and whatever the reaction needs to be given, that will be given by the Commerce Ministry and MEA, not by me,” ANI reported.

US Supreme Court Declares Trump’s Reciprocal Tariffs Unconstitutional

The comments come after the US Supreme Court issued a historic 6-3 decision against the Trump administration. The court decided that the government had overstepped its authority in the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) when it issued broad tariffs on imported goods.

The court said that the invocation of emergency economic powers in the 1977 law did not provide the government with the authority to take the broad trade actions, which is a significant blow to the trade agenda of the Trump administration.

Implications for India-US Trade Relations

The impact of the ruling may be far-reaching in terms of international trade, including trade agreements between India and the US. Joshi clarified that the Indian government would study the ruling and take necessary action in consultation with the concerned ministries.
