Reigning world champion D Gukesh has been keeping mum about his favourites for the upcoming Candidates Tournament; however, when he was asked about his ideal challenger, he had a clear answer.
Gukesh Names Pragg As Ideal Challenger For Maiden World Championship Defense
Speaking at the Prague International Chess Festival, Gukesh said he would love to defend his world title against fellow Chennai star R Praggnanandhaa.
“Personally, I would like to face Pragg. It would be an Indian clash, and it would be great for the Indian fans,” Gukesh told Chessbase India.
Well, an all-Indian World Championship match would be a historic moment and a huge boost for the chess fans across the country.
It has to be noted that D Gukesh would be looking forward to making a turnaround when he leads India in the Prague International Chess festival, especially after his underwhelming performances of late. He suffered an early exit from the World Cup and had a disappointing time at the Tata Steel Masters.
Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, and Erigaisi Drive India’s Chess Surge
Over the past two years, D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, and Arjun Erigaisi have led India’s rise in world chess.
Gukesh became the youngest world champion in 2024, but the national rankings have since shuffled. Praggnanandhaa climbed to India No. 2 in the live FIDE ratings, Gukesh is third, and Erigaisi currently leads among Indian players. The battle at the top remains close and exciting.
Praggnanandhaa vs Gukesh: A Rivalry to Watch
While their battles over the board are fierce, the bond between Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa is built on respect.
“I started playing before him. I was already stronger when I was growing up in my age category,” Pragg told Curly Tales last year.
“When we are off the board, we are just normal guys.”
Praggnanandhaa also explained how their styles differ. He described Gukesh as deeply focused on calculation.
“He is more calculation-based, trying to find the truth in the position, and going deep into every possible continuation,” Praggnanandhaa said.
“I also go deep into the position, but I have my intuition guiding me… I think I am a more technical player while he is more of an aggressive and calculation-based player.”
Fabiano Caruana Rates Pragg Among Favourites
The praise for Praggnanandhaa is not limited to India. American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana has also backed him as one of the strong contenders for the Candidates.
“I would put Pragg quite high among the favourites… last year he showed he can win top tournaments. That elevates him more than the current ratings,” Caruana said.
With talent, rivalry, and mutual admiration all in the mix, Indian chess fans could be in for something truly special.
