A dramatic courtroom trial in New York has brought new attention to an alleged international assassination plot targeting prominent American political leaders. A Pakistani national accused of planning the killings told a federal jury that Iranian intelligence operatives pressured him into arranging the attacks.
The man, identified as Asif Merchant, is currently facing trial in a federal court in Brooklyn on charges including terrorism and murder-for-hire. Prosecutors claim he travelled to the United States to recruit assassins who could kill American politicians. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
Merchant has pleaded not guilty and insists he never intended the plan to succeed.

During his testimony, Merchant described himself as a former banker who later started a banana export business that eventually collapsed. He told the court that he became involved with Iranian contacts several years ago and helped them move money through informal financial networks.
According to his statement in court, his involvement with Iranian operatives began around 2022 or early 2023. He said he initially worked with them on financial activities aimed at bypassing US sanctions on Iran.
Merchant later claimed he was recruited by an Iranian intelligence handler who introduced himself as Mehrdad Yousef.
“He asked me if I was interested in doing some work for the Iranian government, and I said yes,” Merchant said during testimony.

At that time, Trump and Biden were the main candidates in the 2024 US presidential election, while Haley had recently ended her campaign. The prosecution claims Merchant attempted to recruit people in the United States who could carry out the killing.

Court documents show that Merchant travelled to New York and met two individuals he believed were contract killers. The meeting reportedly took place at a motel in Queens.
During the meeting, investigators say Merchant discussed possible ways to carry out the assassination. Hidden cameras recorded the conversation as part of an undercover operation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Prosecutors say Merchant handed over $5,000 as an advance payment to the supposed assassins. However, the individuals were actually undercover FBI agents who had been monitoring the case.
Law enforcement arrested Merchant in July 2024 before any attack could take place.

According to his statement, the alleged handler visited areas near his family’s residence in Iran and displayed a weapon as a warning. Merchant said he believed the threats were serious and felt he had no choice but to cooperate.
He also claimed he expected authorities to arrest him before any attack could take place.
