In what many are calling the most high-octane encounter on the ATP Tour since the Australian Open, world No. 2 Jannik Sinner narrowly escaped a fierce challenge from Brazil’s rising star, Joao Fonseca on Tuesday, March 10. The Italian second seed secured his spot in the BNP Paribas Open quarterfinals with a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) victory, though the scoreline barely scratches the surface of the “supersonic” level of tennis displayed on Stadium 1.

The match was a masterclass in modern power tennis, defined by heavy baseline exchanges and aggressive “serve-plus-one” tactics. Despite the gap in their rankings, Fonseca played with zero inferiority complex, pushing Sinner to the absolute brink for one hour and 58 minutes.

The statistical story of the night was written by the forehand wing. The duo combined for a staggering 36 forehand winners, whereas Sinner notably struggled to find the same range on his backhand, striking only three winners from that side. Both men remained incredibly efficient on their deliveries, with a third of all serves going unreturned and both winning over 50% of points behind their second serves.

The opening set reached a dramatic crescendo in the tie-break, where Fonseca stormed to a 6-3 lead. With three set points in his pocket, the Brazilian looked poised to take the lead. However, Sinner’s champion pedigree surfaced just in time; the Italian reeled off five consecutive points to snatch the set from under Fonseca’s nose.

While Sinner appeared to take control with a 5-2 lead in the second set, Fonseca’s resilience shone through. Serving for the match at 5-3, Sinner was broken at love by a defiant Fonseca, forcing yet another tie-break. The Italian eventually closed the door on his first match point, punishing a short second serve with a violent forehand return winner.

“I had to find my best tennis tonight because Joao was playing at an incredible level,” Sinner noted after the match, acknowledging the difficulty of the task.

Fonseca, though defeated, remained optimistic in his press conference: “I think it was a good match. From the first point, the level was very high and extremely tight. I felt like I was playing well and found my rhythm out there today. In the end, the difference came down to a few key points. I had my chances in the first set, but he served exceptionally well and applied a lot of pressure during the big moments. Credit to him for the win today. I gave it my best effort, and while there are certainly things to work on, I’ll be ready for our next encounter.”

Sinner now moves into the quarterfinals to face 25th-seeded American Learner Tien, who will be competing in his maiden Masters 1000 quarterfinal.
