Bitcoin Price Today (22 August): Bitcoin has suddenly returned to the centre of the crypto market after a powerful week-long rally pushed the world’s largest cryptocurrency above $77,000. The move marks a sharp turnaround for BTC, which had been trading near the $62,000-$66,000 range earlier in the week. Bitcoin gained more than 22% over the week and reached around $79,500 at its peak, putting it on course for its strongest weekly performance in more than three years.

The rally gathered pace after the US Treasury announced plans to increase its purchases of longer-dated government bonds. Investors also responded positively to renewed political support for the crypto sector, stronger spot Bitcoin ETF inflows and a wave of short-position liquidations.

Bitcoin Price Today (22 August)

Bitcoin was trading around $77,500 in the latest available market data on August 22. The cryptocurrency had climbed as high as roughly $79,500 during Friday’s trading session before giving back some gains.

BTC has now recorded one of its strongest weekly rallies in years, with the cryptocurrency gaining roughly 22%-23% over the week. If the gains hold, this would mark Bitcoin’s best weekly performance since March 2023.

Bitcoin remains below its previous record above $126,000, but the latest move represents a significant recovery from its June low near $58,642.

Bitcoin Price Today in USD (22 August)

The latest available price puts Bitcoin at approximately $77,500 USD.

BTC crossed $77,000 during the rally and briefly approached the $80,000 psychological level. The cryptocurrency’s intraday high was around $79,500, according to market reports.

The sharp move has placed Bitcoin firmly back in focus among traders, particularly after several weeks of relatively weak price action.

Bitcoin Price Today in INR (22 August)

At an indicative exchange rate of $1 = ₹95.70, Bitcoin at $77,500 is worth approximately ₹74.17 lakh.

Therefore:

  • Bitcoin price: $77,500
  • Bitcoin price in INR: ₹74,16,750
  • Recent intraday high: $79,500
  • Approximate value at $79,500: ₹76.08 lakh

The INR value can change continuously because both Bitcoin and the USD-INR exchange rate fluctuate.

Bitcoin Price Today in GBP (22 August)

At the latest indicative exchange rate, $77,500 is approximately £56,810.

Bitcoin’s move towards $80,000 has also lifted the value of BTC in pound terms, although the exact GBP price changes with movements in both Bitcoin and the British pound.

Bitcoin Price Today in Euro (22 August)

Bitcoin at $77,500 is approximately €66,310 based on the latest indicative USD-EUR exchange rate.

The cryptocurrency’s strong weekly rally has therefore pushed its euro-denominated value significantly higher as well.

Bitcoin Price Today in Yen (22 August)

At the latest indicative USD-JPY exchange rate, $77,500 is approximately ¥12.32 million.

The yen value can move independently of Bitcoin because currency fluctuations can amplify or reduce BTC’s price when measured in Japanese yen.

Why is Bitcoin Up Today? (22 August)

US Treasury bond buybacks boosted risk appetite

One of the biggest catalysts behind Bitcoin’s rally was the US Treasury’s decision to increase its purchases of longer-dated government debt.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the department would at least double the size of its long-dated bond buybacks. The announcement helped push long-term yields lower and encouraged investors to take on more risk.

The move also raised expectations that greater liquidity could benefit risk assets such as cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin ETF demand returned

Institutional demand has become another major source of support.

US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded more than $1 billion in weekly net inflows, while another analysis put total inflows at around $1.6 billion from Monday through Thursday. Thursday alone saw approximately $606 million enter spot Bitcoin ETFs.

The renewed ETF demand suggests that institutional investors have started returning to Bitcoin after substantial outflows earlier in the year.

Short sellers faced massive liquidations

Bitcoin’s rapid rise also triggered a major short squeeze.

Nearly $2.5 billion in leveraged bearish Bitcoin positions were liquidated over three days, according to data cited by Bloomberg. As prices moved higher, traders betting against Bitcoin were forced to close their positions, adding further buying pressure.

Trump administration boosts crypto optimism

Political developments have also supported the cryptocurrency market.

President Donald Trump met with crypto industry executives this week and renewed his support for cryptocurrency legislation, including the proposed CLARITY Act. The developments added to expectations of a more favourable regulatory environment for digital assets in the US.

Dollar weakness adds another tailwind

The US dollar has weakened amid concerns surrounding the Treasury’s bond-buying strategy and the country’s fiscal position. Bitcoin and gold have both benefited as investors look for assets that could offer protection against currency and inflation risks.

Bitcoin Market Snapshot (22 August)

Metric Latest Update
Bitcoin Price Around $77,500
Intraday High Around $79,500
Weekly Gain Around 22%-23%
USD Value ~$77,500
INR Value ~₹74.17 lakh

Euro Value ~€66,310
JPY Value ~¥12.32 million
Key Support Factors ETF inflows, Treasury buybacks, short squeeze

Market Sentiment Strongly bullish

Bitcoin’s latest rally is being supported by several factors rather than a single catalyst. ETF buying, Treasury actions, short-position liquidations and improving regulatory sentiment have combined to push BTC towards the $80,000 mark.

However, the sharp rise also highlights Bitcoin’s volatility. After gaining more than 20% in a single week, traders may see increased profit-taking and price swings if buying momentum weakens.
