What Is Happening in the US Stock Market Today?

The investors on Wall Street are operating under an ambivalent scenario in which robust earnings are pitted against fears of inflation, interest rate, and geopolitics. The S&P 500 hit an all-time high in intraday trading, building on a stellar recovery that has seen the index rise by over 6% in just one week whereas the Dow has gained more than 5% and the Nasdaq is up more than 9%.

The rally has also seen support from firms such as Disney and Eli Lilly that have beaten quarterly estimates while Disney rose over 2%, Eli Lilly shot up after delivering strong earnings and revenues that beat market expectations. On the other hand, investors were cautious amid pressures facing some technology stocks and the shares of Advanced Micro Devices fell after beating market expectations only partially.

Why Is US Stock Market Up Today?

Several factors helped lift investor confidence:

  • Strong earnings by companies raised hopes about company profitability.
  • Optimism with regard to developments on the Strait of Hormuz eased concerns about energy supplies.
  • Decreasing yields on Treasuries encouraged investing in risky assets.
  • A declining US dollar fueled commodities, especially gold.
  • Investors continued their hopes that investments in AI would spur growth in the future.
  • However, the market still reacts to inflation figures and geopolitical events.

SpaceX Dives 12% After AI Spending Surge Rattles Investors

Shares of SpaceX fell under pressure due to the negative reaction of the investors regarding the massive AI investments by the company. The company incurred a capital expenditure of $18.4 billion in the second quarter, which was almost six times greater than what the company used to incur previously.

The stock fell about 12% after the earnings release because of concerns over whether all this expenditure will yield good enough returns. SpaceX stressed that its vision was for growth in the long term and it expected to grow immensely in future revenue sources such as satellites and AI computing.

Hormuz Deal Would Give Iran Control of Inbound Traffic

The energy market was also looking out for news coming out of the Strait of Hormuz, which is among the major oil transit points. Negotiations were going on between Iran and Oman and the outcome of the talks was likely to have a bearing on shipping through the strait but several problems are yet to be sorted out.

Oil Prices Rise After Houthis Claim Saudi Tanker Attack

Crude oil prices rebounded following a threat by Houthis from Yemen that their militant group was behind an assault on a Saudi Arabian vessel in the Red Sea. The price of Brent crude was trading at about $80.22 per barrel and the US West Texas Intermediate contract was changing hands at $76.12 per barrel.

Copper Hits 12-Week High as Global Supply Tightens

Copper prices rose to their highest levels in 12 weeks, with traders looking at reduced inventories and rising demand in the US due to tariffs on imported refined copper. Three-month copper traded on the London Metal Exchange (LME) was up 0.2% to $14,095 per metric ton, rising to $14,125 which is its highest since May 14. This was due to reduced LME stockpiles and greater purchases in the US market.

COMEX copper futures were also trading at a premium against LME futures due to expected supply chain disruptions due to tariff decisions. Copper is a key barometer of global economic performance due to its use across various industries.

Treasury Yields Fall as Oil Dips on Strait of Hormuz Hopes

The US treasury yields fell amid expectations of falling crude oil prices and a reduction in geopolitical risks while the US 2-year Treasury yield fell by 0.66 basis points to stand at 4.187%. This marked the lowest yield level for the 2-year Treasury bond since July 20 and this change was caused by changing expectations concerning interest rate policies by the US Federal Reserve. On the other hand, the 10-year Treasury yield fell by 1.23 basis points to 4.615% while the spread between 2-year and 10-year treasury yields widened to 42.6 basis points.

Gold Climbs Over 3% on Weak Dollar & Middle East Concerns

Gold prices rose due to investors seeking safety in precious metals against the backdrop of currency fluctuations and geopolitical tensions. Spot gold climbed 3%, hitting $4,199.78 per ounce, marking its highest price since June 22. Gold futures in the US increased 2.6% to $4,260.80 and this rise is attributed to the weakening of the US dollar, lower Treasury yields, factors that usually boost investment in precious metals, which do not yield any interest while investors were following developments in the Middle East region.
