US Stock Market Today: The performance on Wall Street was positive because of the positive response by investors to the lower than expected US inflation numbers, giving credence to the idea that the Federal Reserve will hold on to the interest rates at least in the short run. The reduced numbers on the inflation front created a better appetite for risks, resulting in another buying spree for the semiconductors and AI stocks.

Sentiments among investors were positively influenced by the good earnings reports from some leading financial firms, despite the weak quarterly report issued by IBM and the uncertainty concerning Lucid Group. Investors are currently paying attention to the next policy decision from the Federal Reserve amid the analysis of inflation figures, earnings and geopolitical events.

What is Happening in the US Stock Market Today?

US stocks rallied on the back of an inflation report indicating lower than expected price levels for both the headline as well as the core consumer index. Lower levels of inflation reinforced market expectations about the Fed’s reluctance to increase rates anytime soon, leading to renewed investments in growth sectors. There was a big rally in semiconductor stocks which had fallen in the previous trading session while Nvidia surged by 4% and Micron Technology added almost 5%.

The financial stocks were also boosted as many major banks showed strong earnings. The Goldman Sachs stock increased by over 7% as its profits beat the expectations of Wall Street analysts while other banks that saw a gain included the JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America. The drop in IBM stock however, prevented the Dow from showing better gains.

Why Is US Stock Market Up Today?

  • The US CPI was milder than expected and eased concerns about an impending Fed rate increase.
  • Lowering Treasury bond yields improved the sentiment for tech stocks.
  • Semiconductors bounced back strongly from recent profit-taking positions.
  • Nvidia, Micron, AMD and Lam Research were top gainers on the Nasdaq index.
  • Goldman Sachs posted better-than-expected results and helped boost banking stocks.
  • Increased investments were seen in AI-based companies with the return of optimism in demand.
  • The decline in the US dollar improved investors’ sentiments.
  • The VIX was near 16 levels.

Lucid Shares Plunges as Restructuring Effort Sparks Investor Concern

Lucid Group suffered one of the largest declines in the current session following news that the electric carmaker hired AlixPartners, which specializes in restructuring, to help improve efficiencies. Even though the firm denied rumors of bankruptcy and takeover, there were worries from investors about reduced production, canceled guidance, layoffs and upcoming funding needs. In spite of the fact that the firm is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, there are speculations that Lucid will need more funds in the future.

Why IBM Shares Crashed 26%

The stock value of IBM experienced its largest one-day fall in years following its report of lower-than-projected quarterly profit. IBM generated an adjusted profit of $2.93 per share and $17.2 billion in sales, beating the forecasts of $3.01 per share and $17.86 billion respectively.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said that many enterprise customers shifted money from software and consultancy to the infrastructure side of artificial intelligence, which includes hardware like servers and storage as well as memory chips. This led to an overall negative forecast and IBM stocks fell by 24-26% as the worst performance since 1987.

US Stocks Inch Higher After Soft CPI

The decline in inflation was the primary trigger for the performance of Wall Street and not only headline inflation declined but core CPI figures also saw some moderation, thus putting less strain on the Federal Reserve to consider tightening monetary policy further. The market perceived the developments as a positive sign that interest rates may not be raised in the coming period. Tech stocks performed exceptionally well meanwhile low bond yields, along with better-than-expected corporate profits, lifted all major indexes and gold prices also appreciated by over 2%.
