Dow Jones Today: Dow Jones futures edged higher on Thursday as investors looked for a recovery after Wall Street’s three-session decline. Market attention has shifted to fresh U.S. inflation data, while crude oil prices above $100 a barrel and elevated Treasury yields continue to pressure investor sentiment. According to Reuters, Dow E-minis were up 102 points, or 0.19%, at 6:53 a.m. ET.

Dow Jones Futures Today

Dow Jones futures indicated a modestly higher opening for U.S. stocks on Thursday, September 10, after the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell for a third consecutive session. Reuters reported that S&P 500 futures were up 0.06%, while Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.25% at the same time. The move suggests investors remain cautious as markets assess the impact of higher energy prices, rising bond yields and upcoming inflation figures on the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.

Dow Jones Today: Index Falls 405 Points

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 405.41 points, or about 0.8%, on Wednesday to close at 52,380.66. The S&P 500 declined 0.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.6%.

The latest decline came as investors reacted to another surge in oil prices and higher Treasury yields. The Dow has now come under pressure during a three-session slide, with markets increasingly focused on whether higher energy costs could add to inflation.

Oil Price Tops $100

Brent crude prices moved above $100 a barrel for the first time since July, becoming one of the major factors weighing on Wall Street. Reuters reported that Brent settled near $101 a barrel after crossing the $100 mark, with supply disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict affecting routes through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

Higher oil prices can raise costs for businesses and consumers and potentially add to inflationary pressure. That has made energy prices an important factor for investors assessing the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision.

Treasury Yields Remain Elevated

U.S. Treasury yields have also remained a major concern for stock-market investors. Reuters reported that the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield reached 4.8508%, its highest level since 2023.

Higher Treasury yields can make government bonds more attractive relative to equities while also increasing borrowing costs across the economy. Investors are therefore watching the bond market closely as they assess whether higher yields could continue to weigh on technology and growth stocks.

US Inflation Data In Focus

The next major market catalyst is the U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) report for August, due later Thursday. Although the PPI generally receives less attention than the Consumer Price Index, investors will examine the data for signs that higher input and energy costs are feeding into broader inflation.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is scheduled for Friday, making this a particularly important stretch for markets. Reuters said stronger-than-expected inflation readings could reinforce concerns about further Federal Reserve tightening.

Fed Rate Hike Bets Rise

Markets are also reassessing the Federal Reserve’s next policy move. Reuters reported that traders saw a 62.2% probability of a rate hike this month, according to the CME FedWatch tool.

The combination of higher oil prices, persistent inflation concerns and elevated Treasury yields has increased uncertainty around the path of U.S. interest rates. Investors will therefore closely compare the inflation data with recent economic indicators before adjusting their expectations.

Apple, Meta And American Eagle In Focus

Several major companies were also moving before the opening bell. Reuters reported that Apple shares rose 1.33% following its latest product launch, while Meta Platforms gained 1.39% after its strongest session in more than two months.

Meanwhile, American Eagle Outfitters shares dropped 11.87% in premarket trading after the retailer maintained its annual comparable-sales forecast and indicated that gross margins could remain unchanged from a year earlier in the current quarter.

Dow Jones Today: What Investors Should Watch Today

For the Dow Jones and broader U.S. stock market, investors are likely to focus on the August PPI report, movements in crude oil, Treasury yields and changing expectations for the Federal Reserve.

A hotter-than-expected inflation reading could add to rate-hike concerns, while signs that price pressures remain contained could provide some relief to equities. Oil-market developments will also remain important because sustained energy-price increases could complicate the inflation outlook.

Dow Jones Today: Key Points

The Dow Jones futures market was pointing to a modestly higher opening on Thursday after the index fell about 0.8% on Wednesday. However, oil above $100 a barrel, elevated Treasury yields and upcoming U.S. inflation data remain major risks for Wall Street. Investors are now awaiting the latest PPI figures for further clues about inflation and the Federal Reserve’s next move.
