Dow Jones Today: Dow futures slipped 0.1% on Friday, September 4, as investors awaited the closely watched U.S. jobs report for August and assessed the latest signals on the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook. The move followed a strong Wall Street rally in the previous session, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 624 points.

The Dow closed Thursday at 53,686.11, up 624.16 points, or 1.18%, after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller indicated that he could support keeping interest rates steady if upcoming data confirms that inflation pressures are easing.

Dow Jones Futures Today

Dow futures were down 58 points, or 0.11%, in early trading on Friday. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures gained about 0.05%, while Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 0.44%, as investors positioned for the August U.S. employment report.

The cautious start comes after a broad rally on Wall Street on Thursday. The Dow gained 1.18%, the S&P 500 rose 1.06%, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.40%.

For Dow Jones investors, the immediate focus is whether the jobs data changes expectations for the Federal Reserve’s September meeting.

Dow Jones Futures Today: Fed Rate-Hike Bets Fall To 50%

Federal Reserve policy remains one of the biggest drivers for U.S. stocks.

According to CME FedWatch data cited by Reuters, markets were pricing in about a 50% probability of a quarter-point Fed rate hike in September, down from 63.2% previously. The sharp change followed Waller’s comments that he would favor holding rates steady if forthcoming data shows inflation continuing to moderate.

The shift has helped ease pressure in the bond market and provided support to equities. However, investors remain cautious because inflation risks have not disappeared.

US Jobs Report Today: Why It Matters

The August nonfarm payrolls report is the key economic release for Wall Street on Friday.

A Reuters survey of economists expects the U.S. economy to have added 56,000 jobs in August, following an unexpected decline of 23,000 jobs in July. The unemployment rate is forecast to remain at 4.1%, although Reuters reported that a rise to 4.2% remains a possibility.

A stronger-than-expected jobs report could revive concerns about inflation and increase the possibility of tighter Federal Reserve policy. Conversely, weak employment growth could reinforce expectations that the Fed will leave rates unchanged.

Why The Fed Is Watching Inflation Closely

The labor market is not the only factor influencing the Federal Reserve.

Recent economic data have highlighted continuing price pressures. Reuters reported that prices paid by U.S. services businesses for inputs rose to their highest level since August 2022 in August, adding to concerns that inflation could remain above the Fed’s 2% target.

Waller, however, said recent data showed signs of disinflation and suggested that upcoming inflation figures could be more important for the Fed’s decision.

Investors will therefore turn their attention to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) reports due next week.

Dow Jones Futures Today: Treasury Yields, Oil Prices In Focus

U.S. Treasury yields remain another important market signal.

The 10-year Treasury yield was around 4.75% on Friday after declining following Waller’s remarks. The two-year yield, which is particularly sensitive to expectations for Federal Reserve policy, was around 4.33%.

Meanwhile, oil prices remained elevated amid geopolitical tensions. Reuters reported Brent crude at around $95.52 a barrel, with prices up about 7% for the week. Higher energy prices could complicate the inflation outlook and make the Fed’s policy decision more difficult.

Dow Jones Today: Stocks To Watch

Several individual stocks were also moving before the opening bell.

Lululemon Athletica shares fell more than 20% in premarket trading after the company cut its full-year profit and revenue forecasts. Adobe shares dropped about 2.8% following news that longtime CEO Shantanu Narayen would hand over the role to insider Anil Chakravarthy.

Meanwhile, Nvidia gained 1.8% on Thursday after announcing plans to acquire developer platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Broadcom, however, declined 2.7% after issuing a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter revenue forecast.

Dow Jones Futures Today: What Investors Should Watch Today

For the Dow Jones and broader U.S. stock market, investors should monitor:

  • August U.S. nonfarm payrolls

  • U.S. unemployment rate

  • Federal Reserve rate-hike expectations

  • 10-year and 2-year Treasury yields

  • Oil prices and inflation risks

  • Upcoming CPI and PPI inflation data

  • Major corporate earnings and guidance

The jobs report could create significant volatility if the actual figures differ sharply from economists’ expectations.

Dow Jones Today: Market Outlook

The Dow enters Friday’s session after a strong 1.18% gain, but investors remain cautious ahead of the U.S. employment data. The latest change in Fed rate expectations has offered some relief to stocks, with the market now pricing a 50% chance of a September rate hike, compared with 63.2% previously. However, the Federal Reserve’s final decision is likely to depend heavily on inflation data and broader economic conditions.

For now, the August jobs report is the main catalyst for Wall Street. A major surprise could move the Dow Jones, Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar sharply, while next week’s CPI and PPI reports are expected to provide further clues about the Fed’s interest-rate path.
