Dow Jones Today Live: Wall Street came under pressure on Tuesday, August 18, as rising oil prices, higher U.S. Treasury yields and uncertainty over the U.S.-Iran conflict weighed on investor sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 132 points, or about 0.3%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.46% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.04%, according to Reuters.

The selling was particularly pronounced in technology and semiconductor stocks. Nvidia shares fell about 2% and Meta Platforms declined about 3%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 3.7%. At the same time, energy stocks gained as crude prices moved higher.

Dow Jones Today Live: Indexes Fall As Wall Street Faces Fresh Pressure

The Dow’s decline came as investors assessed several risks at the same time, including rising energy prices, elevated bond yields and uncertainty surrounding U.S.-Iran negotiations.

The S&P 500 lost 0.46%, while the Nasdaq’s 1.04% decline reflected the heavier pressure on technology and growth stocks. Reuters said Wall Street’s major indexes moved toward near two-week lows during the session.

Oil Prices Rise Above $90

Oil emerged as one of the biggest market drivers on Tuesday. Brent crude climbed above $90 a barrel as hopes for progress in U.S.-Iran talks weakened.

Reuters reported that Brent prices rose about 0.5% during the session. Higher oil prices have raised concerns that prolonged energy-market disruptions could add to inflation pressures.

The energy sector benefited from the move, with S&P 500 energy stocks gaining 1.4%, according to Reuters.

Treasury Yields Surge To Multi-Year Highs

Another major factor weighing on stocks was the sharp increase in Treasury yields.

The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield climbed to around 5.327%, its highest level since 2007, according to Reuters. The 10-year yield also moved close to its highest level since January 2025.

Higher long-term yields can put pressure on growth and technology stocks because they increase borrowing costs and can reduce the relative attractiveness of equities.

Nvidia, Meta Lead Technology Selloff

Technology stocks were among the biggest losers on Wall Street.

Nvidia declined about 2%, while Meta Platforms fell around 3%, Reuters reported. The broader semiconductor sector performed even worse, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index falling 3.7%.

Investors are also watching Nvidia closely ahead of its upcoming earnings report, which could provide another indication of whether strong demand for artificial-intelligence infrastructure can continue supporting technology valuations.

Energy Stocks Gain As Oil Climbs

Energy stocks moved in the opposite direction from much of the technology sector.

The S&P 500 energy sector gained 1.4% as crude prices increased, according to Reuters. The divergence highlights how geopolitical developments can simultaneously hurt some parts of the stock market while benefiting companies exposed to higher energy prices.

Healthcare and consumer staples also gained as investors moved toward more defensive areas of the market amid increased volatility.

US-Iran Tensions Remain In Focus

The latest market moves were closely linked to developments surrounding the U.S.-Iran conflict.

Reuters reported that peace talks had stalled, while Iran had adopted what it described as a more offensive military posture. The United States had also declined to renew a temporary ceasefire, adding to uncertainty in financial markets.

The uncertainty has become particularly important for oil markets because of concerns about potential disruptions to energy supplies.

Fed Rate Outlook: Investors Await Meeting Minutes

Investors are also looking ahead to signals from the Federal Reserve.

Markets are awaiting the release of minutes from the Fed’s July meeting, as well as the upcoming Jackson Hole symposium. Both could provide clues about the central bank’s thinking on interest rates and inflation.

Reuters reported that traders had reduced expectations of a September Fed rate hike, with the implied probability falling to 34.6% from 48.4% a week earlier.

Dow Jones Today Live: What Investors Should Watch

For investors tracking the Dow Jones today, several factors could remain important in the coming sessions:

  • Oil prices: Any further move above $90 could increase concerns about inflation.

  • Treasury yields: Investors will monitor whether long-term yields remain elevated.

  • Nvidia earnings: The company’s upcoming results will be closely watched because of its importance to the AI trade.

  • Fed meeting minutes: The minutes could provide clues about the interest-rate path.

  • Jackson Hole: Investors will look for further signals on monetary policy.

  • US-Iran developments: Any progress or setback in negotiations could quickly affect oil and equities.

Dow Jones Today Live: Market Outlook

The latest session showed how sensitive Wall Street remains to the combination of geopolitical risk, oil prices and rising bond yields. Technology stocks faced the greatest pressure, while energy and defensive sectors provided some support.

For the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the immediate focus remains on whether rising oil prices and Treasury yields continue to weigh on risk appetite. Investors will also be watching developments in U.S.-Iran talks and upcoming Federal Reserve signals for clues about the next direction for U.S. stocks.
