Dow Jones Today LIVE: Wall Street traded under pressure on Friday, September 4, after a stronger-than-expected US jobs report increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates at its September 15-16 meeting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.33% at 53,509.63, while the S&P 500 fell 0.16% and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.04% at 9:44 a.m. ET, according to Reuters.

The latest market move comes after the US economy added 162,000 jobs in August, nearly three times the 56,000 increase economists polled by Reuters had expected. The unemployment rate remained at 4.1%.

Dow Jones Today LIVE:  Index Falls 0.33%

The Dow came under pressure as investors reassessed the outlook for US monetary policy following the stronger employment figures. At 9:44 a.m. ET, the Dow was down 176.48 points, or 0.33%, at 53,509.63. The S&P 500 declined 0.16% to 7,735.23, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.04% to 26,573.86.

The reaction reflects a key dilemma for investors: stronger employment is positive for the economy, but it could give the Fed more room to keep monetary policy restrictive if inflation remains above its target.

US Jobs Report Surprises Markets

The August employment report was considerably stronger than expected. Nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000, following an upwardly revised gain of 21,000 in July.

Economists surveyed by Reuters had expected payrolls to rise by just 56,000. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate held at 4.1%, while the labor-force participation rate increased to 61.6% from 61.4% in July.

The increase in employment was broad-based. Leisure and hospitality payrolls rose sharply, while local-government education, manufacturing and construction also recorded gains.

Fed Rate-Hike Bets Rise

The strong jobs report immediately changed expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next policy decision.

Short-term interest-rate futures were implying roughly a 65% probability of a rate hike at the September 15-16 meeting, up from about 55% before the employment report, according to Reuters.

That shift is important for the Dow Jones and broader US stock market because higher interest rates can increase borrowing costs and reduce the relative attractiveness of equities.

However, the September decision is not yet certain. Fed officials have emphasized the importance of upcoming inflation data, meaning the next Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index reports could have a major influence on the policy outlook.

Inflation Data Now In Focus

Investors are now turning their attention to next week’s inflation figures.

The jobs report showed that hourly earnings growth remained at 3.1%, a level Reuters reported as being consistent with the Fed’s 2% inflation target. That could provide some relief to policymakers concerned about renewed wage-driven price pressures.

The upcoming CPI and PPI reports could therefore determine whether the latest employment strength translates into a higher probability of a September rate increase or whether the Fed chooses to keep rates unchanged.

Treasury Yields Rise After Jobs Data

US Treasury yields moved higher following the employment report as traders increased expectations for tighter monetary policy.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield was last up 1.21 basis points at 4.774%, while the two-year yield reached its highest level since January 2025, according to Reuters.

Higher Treasury yields can create additional pressure on stocks because they raise the return available from relatively lower-risk government securities and can increase financing costs for companies and consumers.

Oil Prices Today: Crude Slips From Recent Highs

Oil prices moved lower on Friday, offering some relief to markets concerned about inflation.

US crude was down 1.6% at $89.87 a barrel, while Brent crude declined 1.3% to $94.26 a barrel, Reuters reported.

However, the decline comes after a recent oil rally linked to renewed attacks in the US-Iran conflict. Higher energy prices remain an important inflation risk for investors and central bankers.

Nasdaq Today And S&P 500 Today

The broader market was relatively subdued compared with the Dow.

The S&P 500 was down 0.16%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.04% at 9:44 a.m. ET.

The modest declines suggest that investors were cautious rather than rushing into a broad-based selloff. The technology-heavy Nasdaq remains particularly sensitive to changes in interest-rate expectations because higher rates can weigh on the valuation of growth companies.

Dow Jones Today LIVE: Stocks To Watch Today

Investors are also monitoring individual companies after several notable corporate developments.

Lululemon shares came under pressure after the athletic-apparel company cut its full-year forecasts. Adobe also declined after CEO Shantanu Narayen announced a leadership transition. These company-specific moves added another layer of volatility to the broader market.

Dow Jones Today LIVE: What Investors Should Watch Next

For the Dow Jones and broader US stock market, several factors could determine the direction of trading in the coming sessions:

  • US CPI and PPI data: The next inflation readings could influence the Fed’s September decision.

  • Fed rate-hike expectations: Markets are now pricing a higher probability of a September increase.

  • Treasury yields: Further increases could put pressure on equity valuations.

  • Oil prices: Continued geopolitical tensions could keep energy prices elevated.

  • Corporate developments: Earnings, guidance and leadership changes could affect individual stocks.

Dow Jones Today LIVE: Key Takeaway

The Dow Jones’ 0.33% decline on Friday reflects renewed concerns over the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate path rather than a deterioration in the latest US employment data. The 162,000-job increase was significantly stronger than expected, while unemployment remained at 4.1%.

The immediate focus has now shifted from the jobs report to next week’s inflation data. A hotter-than-expected CPI or PPI reading could strengthen the case for a rate hike, while softer inflation could give policymakers more reason to hold rates steady.
