FTSE 100 Today (August 17, 2026): UK stocks moved slightly higher on Monday after US retail sales fell more than expected. The weaker sales data lowered expectations that the US Federal Reserve will tighten interest rates soon, giving some support to London’s major stocks after the FTSE 100 fell 1.4% last week. The FTSE 100 is trading up 0.26% during intraday trading.

UK stocks started the new trading week on a stronger note, with the FTSE 100 rising around 0.3% to about 10,785–10,790 in early trading. Gains were led by mining stocks, while investors took some encouragement from softer US economic data that reduced expectations of an imminent Federal Reserve rate hike. The FTSE 100 had closed at 10,750.11 on Friday, August 14, down 22.56 points, or 0.21%, marking its first weekly decline in five weeks. Mining stocks were a major drag at the end of last week as copper prices weakened.

FTSE 100 Today: What Is Happening in the London Stock Exchange Market Today? (August 17, 2026)

    Mining Stocks in Focus

Mining shares were among the strongest performers in early London trading. Glencore, Antofagasta and Anglo American were each up by roughly 2% in the opening moves, according to market data.  The move represents a reversal from last week’s pressure on the mining sector. On August 13, the FTSE 100 fell 0.6% to 10,772.67, its lowest level in more than two weeks at the time, after Antofagasta cut its copper-production outlook.

    Global Market Support

European equities received support from changing expectations about US monetary policy. Reuters reported that European shares were up around 0.21%, while the pan-European STOXX 600 gained about 0.1% to 658.51. Investors were reassessing the likelihood of another US Federal Reserve rate increase after weaker US economic indicators.  A softer US dollar and lower Treasury yields also supported sentiment, while gold prices gained as investors responded to the changing interest-rate outlook.

    UK Economic Picture

The UK economy remains an important factor for London stocks. Recent data showed UK GDP growth of 0.4% in the second quarter of 2026, providing some support for the domestic economic outlook.  However, concerns about UK household demand remain. Rightmove reported that average UK asking prices fell 2% month-on-month in August to £364,999, the biggest August decline since 2018.

FTSE 100 Today:  What Investors Are Watching in UK Stock Market?

Investors will probably be very cautious on the stock performance of mining companies and the prices of copper due to the recent fall in this sector. In addition, the expectations on interest rates in the USA may have an impact on the overall mood in the market because of disappointing economic statistics. Meanwhile, the movement of the pound against the dollar will continue to play a role for FTSE 100 stocks, especially for firms that have considerable revenues from foreign operations. In the meantime, changes in oil prices and events in the Middle East might affect European markets and the expectations on inflation.

Note: The FTSE 100 began August 17 on a firmer footing after last week’s decline, with basic-resource stocks providing the biggest boost. Nevertheless, the index remains sensitive to commodity prices, global interest-rate expectations and geopolitical developments.
