FTSE 100 Today (August 19, 2026): The FTSE 100 is trading lower on Wednesday, as gains in energy and mining stocks largely offset weakness in banking shares. Banks came under pressure after traders slightly scaled back expectations for a Bank of England rate increase later this year. UK inflation rose to 2.9% year-on-year in July from 2.6% in June, matching forecasts, with much of the increase attributed to higher household energy costs. Smith+Nephew was among the biggest FTSE 100 fallers, dropping as much as 3.7% after CFO John Rogers announced his departure to take up a role in the US. Meanwhile, commodity-linked stocks supported the index, with BP up around 1%, Shell 0.6%, Anglo American and Rio Tinto about 0.7% each, and Glencore 0.5%.

UK Stock Market Today (August 19, 2026): FTSE 100 Index Down Today

FThe FTSE 100 declined amid concerns about UK inflation having risen to 2.9% in July, up from 2.6% in June. In addition, there were further signs of the Bank of England keeping interest rates at the same level in September as the expectation of a rate cut became even more unlikely. On the FTSE 100 list, there was the impact of Smith+Nephew after the resignation of its CFO, John Rogers. Furthermore, high levels of government bonds around the world, combined with concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, were weighing down on overall sentiment in the market. Higher crude prices helped energy-related companies like Shell and BP, but other stocks lagged.
