Fuel Prices Today, 5 April 2026: Fuel prices at state-run outlets in India remain largely stable today, Sunday, April 5, 2026. While regular petrol and diesel rates have seen no major change today, significant hikes were recently implemented for premium fuel variants, private retailers, and commercial LPG due to global crude volatility. State-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) are currently incurring steep under-recoveries of ₹24.40 per litre on petrol and ₹104.99 per litre on diesel, absorbing massive losses to keep retail prices stable for the common consumer .

Premium Fuel & Private Retailer Hikes

Indian Oil Premium Fuel Hike (Delhi)

  • XP100 (100-octane petrol): Increased from ₹149 to ₹160 per litre – a jump of ₹11
  • Xtra Green (premium diesel): Increased from ₹91.49 to ₹92.99 per litre

Shell India Hikes (Bengaluru)

  • Regular petrol: Now ₹119.85 per litre (+₹7.41)
  • Regular diesel: Now ₹123.52 per litre (+₹25.01)

Nayara Energy

  • Petrol: Increased by approximately ₹5 per litre
  • Diesel: Increased by approximately ₹3 per litre

Private retailers have raised prices sharply since late March as they do not receive government compensation for absorbing global crude spikes, unlike state-run OMCs .

CNG & LPG Updates

CNG Prices

  • Delhi (IGL): ₹77.09 per kg (unchanged)
  • Ahmedabad (GSPC): ₹76.65 per kg
  • Bangalore (GAIL): ₹83.20 per kg
  • Torrent Gas recently hiked CNG prices by ₹2.50 per kg in some regions, reflecting broader energy cost pressures

LPG Cylinder Prices (Delhi)

  • Domestic (14.2 kg): ₹913.00 (unchanged since March 7 hike; PMUY beneficiaries pay ₹613 after subsidy)
  • Commercial (19 kg): Increased by ₹195.50 on April 1 to ₹2,078.50 per cylinder – up from ₹1,740 in February 2026

ATF (Jet Fuel) Price Surge

Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices have more than doubled, reaching a record ₹2.07 lakh per kilolitre in Delhi – an increase of 114.5%. However, domestic airlines are reportedly facing only an 8.5 per cent effective increase due to a government-mandated pricing mechanism . Passengers may still see higher airfares in the coming months.

Government’s Excise Duty Relief

To cushion the blow of global crude volatility, the central government slashed excise duty by ₹10 per litre on March 27, 2026:

  • Petrol excise duty: Reduced from ₹13 to ₹3 per litre
  • Diesel excise duty: Reduced from ₹10 to zero

Despite this cut, retail prices did not drop as OMCs are using the relief to offset massive under-recoveries . If global crude costs were fully passed through, petrol could near ₹120 per litre and diesel could approach ₹190 per litre .

Global Oil Market Context

International crude oil prices remain elevated due to the ongoing West Asia conflict and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz:

  • Brent Crude: Trading above $100 per barrel – up nearly 60% since late February
  • WTI Crude: Holding near $98–$100 per barrel
  • Indian Basket: Remains vulnerable as India imports approximately 85% of its crude oil requirements

What This Means for Consumers

Regular Fuel Buyers: State-run pump prices remain stable at ₹94.77/L (petrol) and ₹87.67/L (diesel) in Delhi, thanks to excise duty cuts and OMC absorption of losses. However, OMCs are incurring massive under-recoveries – ₹24.40/litre on petrol and ₹104.99/litre on diesel

  • Premium Fuel Users: XP100 buyers are now paying ₹160/L in Delhi – a near-7% hike. XP95/Speed variants also sit ~₹7 above regular petrol
  • Private Pump Customers: Shell charges significantly more – petrol at ₹119.85/L, diesel at ₹123.52/L in Bengaluru. Consumers are advised to fill up at state-run outlets where possible
  • CNG Users: CNG remains a cheaper alternative at ₹77.09/kg in Delhi, though Torrent Gas has hiked prices by ₹2.50/kg in some regions
  • LPG Households: Domestic cylinders remain at ₹913 (₹613 for PMUY beneficiaries). Commercial LPG users face a much steeper burden – 19kg cylinders now at ₹2,078.50
  • Air Travellers: ATF’s dramatic rise may translate into higher airfares in the coming weeks
  • India Still Competitive: Despite recent hikes, India’s domestic LPG (₹913) remains cheaper than Pakistan (₹1,046), Sri Lanka (₹1,242), and Nepal (₹1,208)

How Fuel Prices Are Determined in India

Retail petrol and diesel prices are revised daily at 6 AM by OMCs based on a dynamic pricing formula. The final pump price includes: base price (linked to international crude benchmarks), freight charges, excise duty (central), dealer commission, and state VAT. This explains price variations between states – Hyderabad and Bhopal are among the most expensive due to higher state VAT, while Chandigarh offers the cheapest fuel among major cities.

Disclaimer: Fuel prices are subject to daily revision by oil marketing companies. All rates listed are indicative and may vary by outlet, location, and date. Private retailer rates vary by location. Please check with your local fuel station or the official IOCL/BPCL/HPCL apps for real-time pricing.
