In a significant upgradation of India-Bhutan bilateral economic relationship, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay have set the stage for a stronger and diversified energy partnership which envisages enhanced energy security, strengthening of their economies, generating employment, enhancing export earnings and contributing to further development of industrial and financial capacities.
The Joint Vision Statement on India-Bhutan Energy Partnership notes that there are unprecedented opportunities to further strengthening the mutually beneficial clean energy partnership, including through development of new energy projects and trade in electricity.
The vision statement follows wide ranging discussions in Thimphu which noted the stellar contribution of clean energy partnership in the development of hydro-power sector of Bhutan, and in providing energy security to the region. Bhutanese firms and technical agencies have demonstrated growing domestic capacity in implementation of energy projects.
