Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (August 05): South Korea’s stock market staged a powerful comeback on Wednesday, August 5, as investors rushed back into technology and semiconductor shares after days of heavy selling. The benchmark KOSPI surged sharply in early trading, forcing the Korea Exchange (KRX) to activate a temporary buy-side sidecar to control excessive program buying.

Strong gains on Wall Street, easing concerns over artificial intelligence spending, hopes for progress in U.S.-Iran diplomatic talks, and renewed institutional buying helped fuel one of the market’s biggest rallies in recent weeks.

The rebound also comes after July’s steep correction, with analysts increasingly viewing the recent decline as a potential long-term buying opportunity.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (August 05): Why is the Korean Stock Market Up Today?

Several positive global and domestic developments lifted investor sentiment across South Korea’s financial markets.

Wall Street closed higher overnight, encouraging investors to return to riskier assets. Concerns over AI-related capital spending also eased, leading to renewed buying in semiconductor stocks.

At the same time, optimism surrounding possible diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz reduced worries about global energy supplies and inflation.

Institutional investors rotated back into technology stocks, helping South Korea’s benchmark indices recover sharply after recent volatility.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (August 05): KOSPI Surges Nearly 4%

The benchmark KOSPI opened with a strong rally and quickly climbed nearly 4% during morning trading.

The sharp rise prompted the Korea Exchange to activate a buy-side sidecar, temporarily suspending program buying for five minutes after KOSPI 200 futures exceeded the exchange’s volatility threshold.

The trading curb aims to stabilise markets during periods of exceptionally strong buying pressure.

KOSPI Performance

  • Opening Gain: +3.85%
  • Morning High: Around +4.5%
  • Trading Level: Near 6,600 points
  • Market Action: Buy-side sidecar triggered at approximately 9:25 a.m. KST

The rally marked one of the strongest sessions for the benchmark index following last month’s sharp correction.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (August 05): KOSDAQ Extends Rally

Technology-heavy KOSDAQ also extended its recent recovery.

The index opened higher and built on Tuesday’s strong gains as investors bought shares in biotechnology, robotics, battery and technology companies.

KOSDAQ Performance

  • Opening Level: 794.93
  • Opening Gain: +1.82%
  • Previous Close: 780.72 (+5.88%)

The continued strength reflects improving confidence across South Korea’s growth-oriented sectors.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (August 05): Samsung Electronics

Samsung Electronics rebounded after several sessions of heavy selling.

The stock recovered as investors responded positively to easing AI-sector concerns, stronger global semiconductor sentiment and renewed institutional buying.

Samsung also benefited from optimism surrounding its next-generation memory technology roadmap and strong quarterly earnings.

Samsung Electronics Share Price

  • Current Price: Around 246,500 KRW
  • Daily Gain: +2.71%
  • Intraday High: 254,500 KRW

The recovery helped support the broader KOSPI because Samsung remains the exchange’s largest listed company.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (August 05): SK Hynix Rebound

SK Hynix emerged as one of the session’s strongest performers.

The semiconductor giant rallied after investors returned to AI-related stocks and welcomed positive developments in high-bandwidth memory technology.

Bullish analyst ratings and optimism surrounding AI infrastructure spending also boosted investor confidence.

SK Hynix Share Price

  • Current Price: Around 1,677,000 KRW
  • Daily Gain: +6.34%

The stock’s rebound significantly contributed to the benchmark index’s sharp advance.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (August 05): What Should Investors Know?

Investors should note that Wednesday’s rally follows one of the sharpest monthly corrections in South Korean equities since 2008. Morgan Stanley recently upgraded South Korean equities from “Neutral” to “Overweight,” arguing that the recent sell-off has created attractive long-term investment opportunities.

The investment bank expects further stabilisation as leveraged positions continue to unwind and projects that the KOSPI could eventually reach 9,000 points over the longer term.

However, market volatility may remain elevated as investors continue monitoring global AI demand, geopolitical developments in the Middle East, oil prices and central bank policies.
