Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (July 8): South Korea’s market witnessed one of its sharpest sell-offs of the year on Wednesday, with the benchmark KOSPI index officially entering bear market territory after falling more than 20% from its recent peak.

A broad-based decline in semiconductor and technology stocks, concerns over the sustainability of the AI boom, and heavy foreign investor selling dragged the market sharply lower.

The weakness followed a global technology rout led by chipmakers in the US, while rising geopolitical tensions and a weaker Korean won further dampened investor sentiment.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (July 8): Why is the Korean Stock Market Down Today?

The South Korean stock market came under intense selling pressure as investors reacted to a combination of domestic and global factors.

Weak sentiment in the semiconductor sector, concerns that AI-related spending could slow after months of rapid growth, and a sharp overnight decline in US technology stocks triggered widespread profit-taking.

Heavy selling by foreign investors added to the pressure, while rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East pushed investors toward safer assets.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (July 8): KOSPI Falls 5.5%

The benchmark KOSPI index plunged about 5.5% during Wednesday’s session, falling to around 7,231 and officially entering bear market territory after losing more than 20% from its all-time high of 9,385.59.

The decline marked one of the index’s biggest single-day losses this year and reflected broad weakness across technology, semiconductor, automobile and battery stocks. The steep correction follows a remarkable rally earlier in 2026, when AI optimism helped push the index to record levels.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (July 8): Why is KOSPI Crashing?

The biggest reason behind the latest crash is growing concern that valuations of AI-related companies have become too expensive. Investors are questioning whether the strong demand for AI infrastructure and memory chips can continue at the same pace over the coming quarters.

The sell-off intensified after global semiconductor stocks fell sharply overnight, prompting investors to reduce exposure to technology shares. Profit booking following months of strong gains also accelerated the decline.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (July 8): KOSDAQ Falls 4.1% – 4.2%

The technology-focused KOSDAQ index also witnessed heavy losses, falling between 4.1% and 4.2% to slip below the 800 mark for the first time in nearly ten months.

Technology, biotechnology and small-cap growth stocks remained under pressure as investors shifted away from riskier assets.

The decline in KOSDAQ reflected the broader weakness across South Korea’s innovation-driven sectors.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (July 8): Samsung Electronics Drops 3.9%

Samsung Electronics fell nearly 3.9%, extending its losses despite reporting strong earnings expectations. Investors largely ignored the company’s positive outlook, focusing instead on concerns that the AI-driven semiconductor rally may be slowing.

Since Samsung is the largest listed company on the Korea Exchange, its decline significantly weighed on the broader KOSPI index and investor confidence.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (July 8): SK Hynix Falls 4.9%

SK Hynix declined about 4.9%, making it one of the biggest drags on the benchmark index. The company has been one of the strongest performers during the AI boom due to its leadership in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used in advanced AI systems. However, investors booked profits amid fears that demand growth could moderate and semiconductor valuations may undergo further correction.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (July 8): Foreign Investors Turn Net Sellers

Foreign institutional investors remained aggressive sellers throughout the session, offloading hundreds of billions of won worth of South Korean shares. The selling was concentrated in semiconductor and technology companies, adding further pressure to the benchmark indices.

Meanwhile, domestic retail investors continued buying the dip, although their purchases were not enough to offset the scale of foreign outflows.

South Korean equities witnessed a broad-based sell-off, with almost every major sector ending in the red. Technology and semiconductor stocks led the decline as concerns over AI-related valuations, foreign fund outflows and weak global sentiment weighed heavily on investor confidence.
