Nasdaq Today: The Nasdaq Composite traded with a cautious bias on Tuesday, August 11, as investors weighed stable oil prices, uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and US-Iran tensions, and upcoming US inflation data.

The Nasdaq Composite stood at 26,607.28, gaining just 1.92 points, or 0.01%. Nvidia’s advance and strong performances among several semiconductor stocks provided support, while declines in Alphabet, Amazon and other major technology names limited gains.

Nasdaq Today Live: How Is the Nasdaq Composite Performing?

The Nasdaq Composite was almost unchanged at 26,607.28, up 1.92 points or 0.01%.

The technology-heavy index struggled to build momentum as investors remained cautious ahead of key US inflation data due Wednesday. The Nasdaq 100 performed somewhat better, gaining 50.02 points, or 0.17%, to 29,671.83.

Why Is the Nasdaq Almost Flat Today?

The Nasdaq was pulled in different directions as semiconductor stocks gained while several major technology companies declined.

Nvidia rose 0.85% to $219.42, providing support to the index. However, weakness in Alphabet and Amazon prevented the broader Nasdaq from making a stronger move.

Investors are also assessing oil prices and geopolitical developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Which Nasdaq Stocks Are Gaining Today?

Semiconductor and technology stocks were among the strongest performers.

ASML jumped 4.43%, while Lam Research gained 2.83%. Meta rose 2.44%, while Analog Devices and Applied Materials advanced 2.36% and 2.16%, respectively.

Nvidia also remained among the key gainers, rising 0.85%.

Which Nasdaq Stocks Are Falling Today?

Several Nasdaq-listed companies declined during the session.

JD.com dropped 4.75%, while NetEase fell 3.28%. Alphabet and Amazon also traded lower, weighing on the technology-heavy index.

The mixed performance highlights the lack of broad momentum across Nasdaq stocks.

Nasdaq Today: What Is Happening With Nvidia Shares?

Nvidia shares gained 0.85% to $219.42, making the chipmaker one of the key supports for the Nasdaq.

The advance followed news that Nvidia was working with six major asset managers to help mobilise more than $500 billion in third-party capital for AI infrastructure.

Nvidia’s market capitalisation was listed at more than $5.35 trillion in the supplied data.

Nasdaq Today: How Are Oil Prices Affecting Tech Stocks?

Oil prices remained relatively stable after Brent crude earlier climbed around 2%.

Brent stood at approximately $87.75 per barrel, while US crude was around $82.23. The retreat from earlier highs reduced some immediate inflation concerns.

However, investors remain alert to developments involving the Strait of Hormuz because a renewed disruption could push energy prices higher and potentially increase inflationary pressure.

Nasdaq Today: Why Is CPI Data Important?

The upcoming US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is the next major catalyst for the Nasdaq.

The data could influence expectations for Federal Reserve interest-rate policy. Higher-than-expected inflation could put pressure on technology stocks by pushing Treasury yields higher, while softer inflation could strengthen expectations for monetary easing.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) due Thursday will provide another important inflation signal.

Nasdaq Today: What Should Investors Watch Next?

Nasdaq investors will closely monitor:

  • US CPI data on Wednesday
  • US PPI data on Thursday
  • Federal Reserve rate expectations
  • Oil prices and Strait of Hormuz developments
  • Nvidia and other AI-related stocks
  • Treasury yields
  • Performance of semiconductor stocks
