Why Is Sensex Up Today?

The BSE Sensex is up for today, primarily because the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has maintained its benchmark rate of 5.25%, keeping the rate policy neutral, in line with what the market had been anticipating. The rally in the market has also gained further strength from a fall in international crude oil rates, and a strong performance in US equities last night, along with the buying interest in rate sensitive sectors like real estate and automobiles.

Positive Global Cues Lift Indian Markets

Asian and Indian stock markets gathered strength on the back of new highs made by key American indices on the basis of strong earnings numbers and expectations of growth in the technology industry. On the other hand, the price of oil in the international market fell sharply amid expectations of a solution to the problem with geopolitical relations that are causing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Falling oil prices have a favorable impact on India, which is a big importer of crude oil.

RBI Keeps Repo Rate Unchanged at 5.25%

The MPC of the RBI kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25%, maintaining its policy stance neutral. The central bank also maintained its optimistic approach towards the Indian economy and forecasted GDP growth of 6.7% for the current fiscal year. Inflation expectations have been slightly revised down, with headline inflation forecasted at 5% from its previous estimate of 5.1%.

Falling Crude Oil Prices Support Market Sentiment

The drop in crude oil prices has boosted investor sentiment. The price of Brent crude has dropped by more than 1% and now is trading below $80 a barrel, easing worries about rising costs and inflation. The fall in energy prices is anticipated to be beneficial for those businesses that are dependent on oil and will help the Indian economy.

Strong US and Asian Market Performance Boosts Confidence

Global market sentiments also helped Sensex to move up. US markets closed at all-time highs on account of favorable corporate results, which lifted investor sentiments. Similarly, markets in other Asian countries like Japan and South Korea also saw steep rise, sending out good signals for Indian stocks.

Rate-Sensitive Sectors Lead Market Gains

Interest buying sentiment could be seen in a number of sectors, particularly interest-sensitive sectors. While the Nifty Realty index moved up by approximately 2.4%, the Nifty Auto index saw a rise of 1.5%. The Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), on the other hand, were supportive of the rally, as they invested in Indian equities in the amount of ₹2,446.47 crore in the previous session.

Sensex Today: Top Performing Stocks

Several large-cap stocks contributed to the Sensex’s positive momentum today, supported by strong sectoral buying and favourable market conditions.

  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T): The engineering major emerged as one of the top gainers among heavyweight stocks, rising over 1.5% after receiving fresh order wins, which boosted investor confidence.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M): The automobile major gained around 1.18%, supported by strong sentiment in the auto sector and continued demand outlook.
  • InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo): Shares of IndiGo advanced around 1.3%-1.5% as falling crude oil prices provided relief to aviation companies by improving cost expectations and operating margins.
  • Bajaj Finance: The non-banking financial company climbed nearly 0.77%, with investors showing confidence ahead of a stable interest rate environment.
  • Shriram Finance: The stock gained around 0.91%, tracking positive movement across major non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).

Sensex Today: Top Losers

The biggest decliners on the BSE Sensex and other stocks on the exchange are mainly Apollo Hospitals, Nestle India, SBI Life Insurance, TCS, and Titan Company. Even as the wider benchmark index is trading in the positive territory because of RBI’s decision to maintain the repo rate at 5.25%, certain FMCGs and pharmaceutical companies are under bearish pressure.

  • Apollo Hospitals
  • Nestle India
  • SBI Life Insurance
  • TCS (Tata Consultancy Services)
  • Titan Company
