S&P 500 Today

The S&P 500 was trading around the area of 7,733 points, staying at the vicinity of all-time highs amid lack of impetus on Thursday. As per the latest reading, the index was quoted at 7,727.74, higher by 4.19 points (0.05%) against 7,733.42 points seen at the open. What Is Happening in the US Stock Market Today?

Equities trading was mostly confined to a range as participants digested yet another round of corporate results. The positive news regarding a potential resumption of the operation of the Strait of Hormuz somewhat reduced fears about possible energy supply disruptions around the world despite the continued climb in the price of crude oil. Once again, it was technology equities that lifted the whole market.

Microsoft rallied by more than 1.5%, Apple rose by more than 1.3% and Nvidia was bid as well amid the ongoing positive sentiment towards artificial intelligence. There were negative earnings announcements too while some technology firms experienced massive selling pressure after announcing weak forward guidance. The stocks of Western Digital, Sandisk, AppLovin and Peloton fell sharply on their quarterly reports that did not satisfy market participants.

Why Is US Stock Market Up & Down Today?

Several factors are influencing today’s market movement:

  • Solid quarterly results by leading tech firms.
  • Higher crude oil prices following recent developments in the Middle East region.
  • Bullish sentiment about advances in talks regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Poor earnings outlook by various consumer and tech stocks.
  • Increased Treasury yields weighing down growth stocks.
  • Continued anticipation that the Fed will be cautious in future rate decision making.
  • Mixed performance in international markets providing a balanced risk environment.

PayPal Surges

However, one of the best-performing stocks in the Nasdaq was PayPal, which advanced by 1.57%, closing at $58.84. This was attributed to the rising investor optimism regarding the digital payment platform amid rotation in some fintech stocks. It should be noted that this was against the backdrop of a tough earnings season for some tech companies but resilience among technology stocks in general while PayPal has not reached its past high level, today’s rise seems to signal more optimism from investors regarding the performance of the company.

Micron Shares Falls

The shares of Micron Technology dropped by 1.83% to approximately 876.81 in Thursday’s trade as the decline made the semiconductor stock one of the losers on the Nasdaq index despite the general gains seen in many technology stocks linked to artificial intelligence. It seems that some investors took profits from the stock due to its remarkable performance in the long run. Although Micron has fallen in price today and it has shown an outstanding 705.55% rise in one year.
