The Indian stock market will remain closed on Monday, September 14, 2026, on account of Ganesh Chaturthi. Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) have included the festival in their 2026 trading holiday calendars. Investors will not be able to conduct regular equity transactions during the day. Equity derivatives trading will also remain suspended.

The next trading session will begin on Tuesday, September 15.

Why Is The Stock Market Closed Today?

September 14 has been designated as a full trading holiday for Ganesh Chaturthi 2026. The NSE and BSE follow separate annual trading calendars, which means their market holidays do not necessarily coincide with the holidays observed by banks, government offices or other institutions. The closure comes after domestic benchmark indices ended the previous week lower for the fifth consecutive week.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: Date And Puja Timings

Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on September 14, 2026. The festival marks the birth of Lord Ganesha and is traditionally associated with worship during the Madhyahna Kaal, or midday period. According to Hindu tradition, Lord Ganesha was born during this period, making it an important time for performing the main Ganesh Chaturthi puja.

The puja timings for September 14 are:

•    Mumbai: 11:20 am to 1:48 pm
•    New Delhi: 11:02 am to 1:31 pm

MCX Trading Timings On September 14

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will follow a different schedule from the equity market on Ganesh Chaturthi. Morning trading will remain suspended from 9 am to 5 pm, after which the evening session will begin at 5 pm. Trading during the evening session is scheduled to continue until 11:30 pm. During the period when US Daylight Saving Time is applicable, the session can extend up to 11:55 pm.

Upcoming Stock Market Holidays In 2026

After the September 14 closure, the remaining trading holidays for 2026 are:

•    October 2, Friday: Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti
•    October 20, Tuesday: Dussehra
•    November 10, Tuesday: Diwali-Balipratipada
•    November 24, Tuesday: Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev
•    December 25, Friday: Christmas

Trading Holiday vs Settlement Holiday

A trading holiday means the stock exchange is shut and investors cannot carry out regular buy or sell transactions. A settlement holiday, meanwhile, affects the clearing and settlement of certain transactions but does not necessarily stop trading. The September 14 Ganesh Chaturthi holiday is a full trading holiday for India’s equity market. Investors should therefore plan their trades around the next market session on Tuesday, September 15.
