Why Is the Indian Stock Market Falling Today?

The Indian share market had seen a steep decline on July 14, 2026, due to deteriorating investor sentiment as a consequence of increasing tension between the United States and Iran, along with an escalation in the price of Brent crude oil crossing the $85 per barrel mark, posing a risk to the flow of energy resources through the Strait of Hormuz. India being a large importer of crude oil, any spike in oil prices would increase the trade deficit and push up the inflation rate. Alongside all these negative trends, the rupee also depreciated beyond the 96 level against the US dollar.

Most sectors traded in the red, with auto, metal and financial stocks leading the losses. However, IT stocks outperformed the broader market, supported by their export-oriented business model and a stronger US dollar, which is generally favourable for the sector.
