UK Stock Market Today (July 8): The UK stock market traded higher on Wednesday, with the FTSE 100 extending gains as rising oil prices boosted energy stocks and helped offset weakness in mining companies. Strong buying in heavyweight stocks such as Shell, Diageo and Associated British Foods lifted London’s benchmark index, while the FTSE 250 outperformed amid strength in domestic shares.

Investors also reacted to improving UK housing data and continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which pushed crude oil prices higher and supported the energy sector.

UK Stock Market Today (July 8)

The London Stock Exchange opened on a positive note despite mixed global sentiment. Investors continued to favour energy and consumer-focused companies as higher oil prices and easing mortgage rates improved confidence.

However, gains remained limited by sharp losses in mining shares, which came under pressure following weakness in metal prices. Overall, market sentiment remained cautiously optimistic as traders balanced geopolitical risks with encouraging corporate updates.

UK Stock Market Today (July 8): London Stock Exchange Market

The London Stock Exchange witnessed buying across several major sectors, led by energy, consumer staples and defence companies.

Shell emerged as one of the biggest contributors after issuing a stronger-than-expected second-quarter trading update, while Diageo and Associated British Foods also attracted investors. Defence contractor Babcock International continued to benefit from expectations of higher defence spending across Europe.

At the same time, mining companies came under heavy selling pressure after lower metal prices weighed on investor sentiment. Anglo American, Fresnillo and Antofagasta remained among the weakest performers on the FTSE 100.
