UK Stock Market Today (September 2):  The FTSE 100 opened lower today. The index started trading at approximately 10,763, lower than Tuesday’s close of 10,789.28, showing weakness in opening trades. Trading information from Europe also showed that the FTSE 100 was down by approximately 0.15% due to weakness in mining companies but gains in leading oil companies curbed its losses. The weak opening is because of rising US-Iran tension, increasing crude oil price, and global bond yield, which are all affecting investor confidence. The price of Brent crude oil was approximately $95.45 per barrel.

UK Stock Market Today (September 2): Why is the UK Stock Market Down Today?

Today, FTSE 100 is lower due to escalating tensions between US and Iran which have resulted in the rise of oil prices and a wider global sell-off in bonds and equities. Brent crude hit $95-97 per barrel. There is worry that any continued disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could exacerbate inflation.

Another significant factor weighing on the UK market is the UK bond market. 10-year gilts’ yield hit 5.268%, the highest since 2008, resulting in an increase in the cost of borrowing for the government and thus exerting further pressure on UK equities. In addition to the UK market, the weakness can be felt in other European markets as well as investors are following a risk-off stance. Early trading data showed the FTSE 100 index down by 0.15% with mining stocks falling on lower metals prices while gains in leading oil companies are offsetting the losses somewhat.
