US Stock Market Today: The New York Stock Exchange began trading on Friday on a cautious tone, as investors sold off tech shares to fuel declines in all three main U.S. indexes. The Nasdaq index lost more than 1% in early trading, while the S&P 500 and the Dow indexes declined after an erratic trading day yesterday while the recent sell-off was mainly led by chip makers, whose stocks pulled back sharply despite posting impressive quarterly results on the back of AI optimism.

The mood of the market changed after information emerged that OpenAI had decided to put off its long-awaited initial public offering (IPO), thus giving rise to concerns over the rate of investment in the artificial intelligence infrastructure. The other major concern of the market participants was the hawkish tone of the Fed, which increased the probability of the rates staying high for a long period of time while on the other hand, the performance of the other assets was affected by different factors as oil prices were down, treasury yields declined, gold tried to bounce back and Bitcoin approached its lowest point in recent months.

U.S. Market Snapshot

Index Level Change Change %
Dow Jones 51,931.63 +11.01 +0.02%
Nasdaq Composite 25,353.11 -5.49 -0.02%
S&P 500 7,359.09 +1.60 +0.02%

Dow Jones

Dow Jones Industrial Average was comparatively resilient compared to the tech-laden indexes while the index started lower following its hitting new record high marks in the previous trading session, defensive buying in healthcare and software names provided support against the losses. Microsoft rose by 3.79%, Salesforce gained 3.99%, IBM increased 3.72% and UnitedHealth jumped up 2.59% however, the fall in Caterpillar (-3.60%) and Goldman Sachs (-2.58%) capped overall gains.

Nasdaq

Tech stocks stayed under heavy pressure due to investors taking profits after several months of gains in artificial intelligence sectors. The Nasdaq Composite index started its trading below 1%, mainly due to the fall in shares of Micron Technology, Nvidia, AMD, Intel and Oracle while the fear about costly AI infrastructure and high valuations of semiconductors led to further selling.

S&P 500

The S&P 500 too declined with a downturn in the technology sector overwhelming the strength seen in the healthcare and consumer sectors. ServiceNow soared 6.91% while Eli Lilly rose 5.35% while netflix increased by 5.02%, with semiconductor firms being some of the worst performing companies.

NYSE

NYSE trading mirrored the risk-averse investing climate while investors shifted from high-growth technology firms to more defensive industries like pharmaceuticals and health care amid lingering uncertainty about the direction of Federal Reserve policy.

What is Happening in the US Stock Market Today?

There were several elements that caused pressure on Wall Street while investors are reconsidering high valuations of companies in the AI sector, following months of unusual growth, whereas increased interest rates have decreased investors’ appetites for risky assets. The news that OpenAI would delay its IPO caused another wave of concern for semiconductor producers that gained from anticipated fast AI infrastructure development.

Nasdaq Falls as Tech Selloff Deepens

Tech stocks kept tumbling in another session on the back of weaker sentiment in semiconductors while Nvidia fell by more than 1%, Alphabet dropped by approximately 2%, AMD along with Micron declined and tech stocks from Asia and Europe also tumbled significantly. Analysts said that investors have become very cautious following an amazing rally of AI companies during the last 12 months.

Dollar Hits Highest Level in Over a Year in Wake of Hawkish Fed Meeting

Despite the fact that Dollar Index has since softened back to the vicinity of 101.10, the US dollar has recently strengthened to its best in over one year’s time on the back of expectations of further hikes from the Fed. A stronger dollar puts pressure on multi-national earnings and lowers the need for riskier investments.

Stock Futures Decline with Chip Stocks Weak After OpenAI IPO Delay Report

Futures of the stock fell following reports that suggested that OpenAI might put off its public offering until next year. Slower market access is expected to slow down the investments in the data centers and semiconductors needed for artificial intelligence.

Micron Falls 5% in Premarket, Paring Earlier Gains Amid Tech Rout

After having declined by about 5% during pre-market trading, Micron Technology has seen a lot of profit from its last trading period wiped away. It has rallied by almost 16 percent after reporting robust quarterly results and positive revenue guidance despite the sound fundamental story and traders opted to book their gains.

Oil Slides Over 3% as Markets Look Past Fresh Iran Tensions

Crude oil prices declined sharply despite renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

  • WTI Crude: $69.20, down 3.78%
  • Brent Crude: $72.14, down 4.14%

Markets largely ignored reports involving shipping activity near the Strait of Hormuz, focusing instead on demand concerns and expectations of slower global economic growth.

U.S. Dollar and Treasury Yields Ease as Oil Prices Slide

Treasury yields moved modestly lower as falling energy prices reduced inflation concerns.

  • U.S. 10-Year Treasury Yield: 4.39%
  • Dollar Index (DXY): 101.10
  • Euro: 1.141
  • Japanese Yen: 161.59 per dollar

Lower bond yields provided limited support to equities but were insufficient to offset the technology selloff.
