US Stock Market Today: U.S. stock futures attempted a modest recovery on Thursday, September 10, after the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite all ended lower in the previous session. Investors are now awaiting key U.S. inflation data, while oil prices above $100 a barrel and elevated Treasury yields continue to weigh on Wall Street sentiment.

Dow Jones Today

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.77% to 52,381.02 on Wednesday, marking another decline for the blue-chip index. Dow futures were indicating a modestly higher opening on Thursday as investors assessed the latest developments in oil markets, Treasury yields and the inflation outlook.

The Dow remains sensitive to developments that could affect economic growth, inflation and interest rates. Investors are particularly focused on whether higher energy costs could keep inflation elevated and influence the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions.

Nasdaq Today

The Nasdaq Composite declined 0.64% to 26,253.34 in the previous session. Nasdaq futures were slightly lower before Thursday’s opening, reflecting continued caution around higher bond yields and the broader interest-rate outlook.

Technology and growth stocks can be particularly sensitive to changes in Treasury yields because higher borrowing costs and discount rates can affect valuations. Investors are therefore watching the bond market alongside the latest inflation data.

S&P 500 Today

The S&P 500 fell 0.48% to 7,636.46 on Wednesday, while U.S. stock futures pointed to a modest recovery ahead of Thursday’s session. The benchmark index has remained under pressure as investors assess rising oil prices and higher government bond yields.

The S&P 500’s energy sector was one of the few areas to gain in the previous session, rising 1.1%, while all other sector indexes declined, according to Reuters.

US Stock Market Today: Oil Price Tops $100

Oil prices remain one of the biggest drivers of the current Wall Street outlook. Brent crude moved above $100 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude also climbed as continuing Middle East tensions raised concerns about global oil supplies.

Reuters reported that Brent was around $102.15 a barrel, while WTI was around $97.50. The Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil and gas shipments, remains heavily constrained amid the conflict.

Higher crude prices are raising concerns that energy costs could add to inflation and complicate the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.

Treasury Yields Rise

U.S. Treasury yields have also become a major focus for investors. Reuters reported that the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield reached about 4.85%, its highest level since November 2023.

Higher yields can reduce the relative appeal of stocks compared with bonds and increase borrowing costs across the economy. The move has therefore added another source of pressure for Wall Street.

US Inflation Data Today

Investors are awaiting the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) report, due Thursday, followed by the more closely watched Consumer Price Index (CPI) report on Friday.

The inflation figures could provide fresh clues about the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision. A stronger-than-expected reading could reinforce concerns that higher energy prices are feeding into broader inflation, while softer data could ease some pressure on markets.

Fed Rate Hike Outlook

Markets are also reassessing the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook. Reuters reported that traders were pricing in a 62.2% probability of another rate hike this month.

The combination of higher oil prices, elevated Treasury yields and inflation uncertainty has made the upcoming economic data particularly important for investors.

Apple, Meta And American Eagle Stocks

Individual stocks are also in focus. Apple and Meta Platforms were among the companies attracting attention ahead of Thursday’s session following recent product and business developments. Reuters reported gains for both companies in premarket trading.

Meanwhile, American Eagle Outfitters shares dropped 11.87% in premarket trading after the retailer’s margin outlook disappointed investors.

US Stock Market Today: What Investors Should Watch Today

The key factors for the US stock market today include the PPI inflation report, Treasury yields, oil prices and changing expectations for the Federal Reserve.

The geopolitical situation remains another important market risk. Continued disruptions to oil supplies could keep crude prices elevated, potentially adding to inflationary pressure and making the interest-rate outlook more uncertain.

US Stock Market Today: Key Takeaway

Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures were attempting a modest recovery after all three major U.S. indexes closed lower on Wednesday. However, oil above $100, elevated Treasury yields and upcoming inflation data remain key factors that could determine the direction of Wall Street trading.
