At that time, the S&P 500 stood at 7,670, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached 53,449 and the Nasdaq Composite was trading at about 26,053. In turn, core PCE inflation increased by 3.3% annually and 0.2% month over month, basically meeting estimates.

What Is Happening in the US Stock Market Today?

The subdued market performance is due to conflicting factors that are working together while lower crude oil prices and relatively lower Treasury bond yields relative to previous high levels have made investors positive, but the inflation rate has been a cause for concern.

The headline PCE inflation rate in July rose by 3.7% compared to the previous year, which was 0.1 percentage point higher than expected according to the market report. Core PCE inflation was at 3.3%, in line with expectations while Nvidia’s results will determine whether the AI stock market is strong or not.

Why Is US Stock Market Up Today?

  • The fall in oil prices is also aiding in easing immediate inflation worries.
  • The yield on Treasury bonds has fallen from its recent peaks, which is positive for equity valuations.
  • Markets in Europe and Asia performed well.
  • Positions have been taken in anticipation of Nvidia’s earnings release.
  • Some strong performances by big companies such as Apple and Microsoft were good for technology stocks.
  • Big gains in certain industrial and health care stocks have compensated for losses in other areas.

The broader picture remains mixed rather than decisively bullish. Reuters reported that hotter inflation increased the perceived probability of a September Fed rate hike from 36% to 44%.

US Stock Market Today: Fed Rate Hike in Focus

The inflation report has clouded the rate debate while the 3.7% headline PCE figure on an annual basis is much higher than the 2% inflation goal of the Federal Reserve, the core figure was less of an issue since it was in line with forecasts, although there was not enough information for investors to think that inflation would soon be back at target. It is now up to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh to make remarks during his address at Jackson Hole this Friday.

The shares of Meta traded erratically as the firm reached an agreement regarding the claims against it related to the effects of its social media sites on young users. The equity traded near the flat line in the provided market analysis because the investors were more concerned about the financial and regulatory implications of the agreement than just the news. This agreement brings yet another legal problem for the firm amid existing concerns about its platforms impact on younger users.

US Stock Market Today: Oil Prices Fall as Trump Targets Iran

Crude oil prices continued their downward trend amid geopolitical events linked to Iran as the price of Brent crude per barrel stood at about $86.42 in the provided evening quote, reflecting a drop of 0.97 percent. It is significant for the decline in crude prices not only from the perspective of the energy market but also since cheap oil eases the burden on inflation rates, transportation expenses and consumer expenditure. The recent weakness of oil prices has helped in supporting bonds and stocks markets as well.

US Stock Market Today: Bitcoin Prices Lower

The price of Bitcoin was $78,163.94, having fallen by $754.07, which is 0.96%. The currency started trading at $78,938 and hit an intra-day high of $79,227.95, but fell to a low of $77,861. This decline reflected a cautious tone across several risk-sensitive assets.

US Stock Market Today: Gold & Silver Prices

Gold remained elevated despite a daily decline while spot gold was quoted around $4,650 an ounce, while international silver traded near $68.20.

Metal Price Support Resistance
Gold $4,650/oz $4,510 / $4,420 $4,750 / $4,890
Silver $68.20/oz $65.50 / $52.50 $70.80 / $78.00

The combination of elevated precious-metal prices and firm Treasury yields shows that investors remain attentive to inflation, currencies and geopolitical risks.
