US Stock Market Today: The stock market provided Wall Street with yet another mixed performance on Tuesday, as traders weighed up record gains posted by the Dow Jones Industrial Average against steep losses in tech stocks. Selling resumed again in chipmakers after positive surprise in earnings from Samsung and as doubts began to arise whether there is enough momentum for further AI spending while healthcare, energy and consumer staples benefited from investor inflows, tech stocks continued falling, sending the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 into losses.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East contributed to the uncertainty, pushing up crude oil prices and causing investors to reconsider their inflation expectations. It was evident that there is a shift in focus away from growth stocks towards value-based stocks.

Dow Jones Today

Despite closing below its intraday high, the Dow Jones Industrial Average once again managed to maintain its dominance against other indexes, as it had seen a brief surge past the 53,000 level before falling back slightly. The blue chip average was up around 0.21% in early trade on the back of solid performances in healthcare, consumer staples and energy sector stocks.

Nasdaq Today

There were aggressive sales in technology stocks, which pushed the Nasdaq Composite index lower by over 1.5%. Most of the pressure was in semiconductors following Samsung’s earnings results, raising doubts about spending on AI infrastructure. Chipmakers such as Intel, AMD, Micron Technology, Lam Research and Applied Materials were sold heavily.

S&P 500 Today

S&P 500 fell by almost 0.75%, as the tech decline more than offset the strength in defensive stocks while the health care, pharma and energy firms were resilient, but the decline in semiconductors dragged the benchmark down.

NYSE Today

NYSE trading was generally a mixture as the financial, health care, consumer staples and oil stocks were purchased, while there was strong selling in technology, semiconductor and electric vehicle stocks. The market breadth showed sector rotation but not panic selling.
