US Stock Market Today: The US equity market rose on Friday, October 2, amid the release of disappointing data on employment that gave a chance for market participants to reconsider the outlook on the Fed’s rates. Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 went up, supported by a decline in bond yields and positive dynamics of tech stocks.

Payroll increase in September was only 29,000 against expectations and the unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1% in the previous month. Slowing pace of hiring is a cause of concern for the economy but investors took the news as a signal for the Fed to reconsider its plans for further monetary tightening.

Nasdaq Today

Nasdaq Composite rose 1.37% to 27,239.80 and outperformed the other two major stock indices. Semiconductors contributed positively to the advance, with ON Semiconductor increasing 6.81%, Texas Instruments up 4.98% and Tesla climbing 4.57%.

The tech stocks were boosted by lower yields on Treasuries, which could enhance the attractiveness of growth firms however, valuations and earning results are key factors to consider.

S&P 500 index rose 0.94% to close at 7,738.26 while some of the top gainers were Accenture, which gained 12.39% on Semiconductor, which gained 6.51% and Coinbase Global, which gained 5.18%. On the other hand, some of the top losers were CRH, which lost 10.01%; Nike, which lost 5.75% and Fair Isaac, which lost 4.17%.

What Is Happening in the US Stock Market Today?

Several developments shaped Friday’s trading session:

  • Major US stock indices opened higher and extended gains.
  • September payroll growth reached only 29,000, below forecasts of 84,000 to 90,000 cited in the supplied reports.
  • Unemployment increased to 4.2%, compared with 4.1% in August.
  • Treasury yields declined as traders reconsidered the Federal Reserve’s next policy move.
  • Technology and semiconductor shares advanced, supporting the Nasdaq.
  • Crude oil prices dropped amid reports of discussions about releasing additional European fuel reserves.
  • Nike shares weakened following its disappointing annual revenue outlook.

Why Is the US Stock Market Up Today?

The main factor appears to be changing expectations for interest rates rather than a sudden improvement in economic conditions.

  • Weaker employment data: Slower hiring may reduce pressure on the Federal Reserve to tighten monetary policy.
  • Falling bond yields: Lower yields can support equity valuations, particularly in technology.
  • Semiconductor demand: Gains in Intel, Nvidia, Texas Instruments and other chip-related companies lifted market sentiment.
  • Reduced oil prices: Cheaper crude may ease some inflation pressures, although energy prices remain sensitive to geopolitical developments.
  • Broad buying interest: All three major indices finished higher in the supplied snapshot.

Investors must still consider whether weakening employment represents temporary volatility or a more persistent slowdown.

US Stock Market Today: Fed Rate-Hike Bets Rise Ahead of October

Expectations regarding interest rates continued to play a critical role in market action on Friday. As reported, there was a probability of roughly 86% that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged at its next meeting in October, compared to around 76% previously.

The disappointing employment report makes the case for patience even stronger however, one must not view these statistics as a sign of what is going to happen during the next meeting. Inflation, wages, consumer spending and further employment numbers can affect market expectations.

US Stock Market Today: Nvidia Earnings in Focus

Nvidia was one of the key stocks that the investor would consider if they were tracking the technology industry. The stock increased by 2.10% and closed at $235.83 in the Dow snapshot, whereas in another quote, the stock closed at $236.66.

Nvidia also featured in the list of stocks hitting their 52-week highs and the investor will probably consider the need for artificial intelligence infrastructure, data centre spending, semiconductors and the guidance from management in evaluating the earnings expectations of the company and this is because Nvidia has a high market capitalization.

US Stock Market Today: Nike Shares Fall Over 10% on Drop in Annual Revenue

However, Nike was still under strain following the prediction of a sharp fall in the annual revenue, partly due to the weakness in China. Moreover, there were announcements of layoffs and restructuring of the business units around the world.

According to the supplied report, the fall was 10.7% within a day. In contrast, the stock snapshot later showed that the company had fallen 6.12% in the Dow list and 5.75% in the S&P 500 list. Such differences can be attributed to different observation periods and sources of information.

US Stock Market Today: Gold Rises as Softer Inflation Data Dents Fed Rate-Hike Bets

Gold rose by 0.34% to $4,192.21 in the snapshot provided above. Weakness in inflation-linked indicators and revised expectations of monetary policy influenced the demand for gold. Gold may be an investment option that appeals to people looking to diversify their portfolio amid economic uncertainty and yet, gold prices depend on other factors too, such as real interest rates, currencies, central bank interventions and geopolitics.

US Stock Market Today: Oil Prices Jump Ahead of Middle East Tensions

In spite of what the headline implies about prices going up, the market data provided clearly shows that oil plummeted significantly during the period under consideration.

The price of US crude went down by 3.81% to $89.33, while Brent crude lost 2.75% to trade at $99.50. The reason for the drop was talk about the possibility of releasing more diesel and crude stocks from Europe and tensions in the Middle East make the situation risky.

US Stock Market Today: US Bond Yields Fall on Slower Jobs Growth

The yields of treasury bonds decreased after the jobs report was released. The news article provided had the 10-year yield at around 5.18% and the market indicators table showed that the 10-year yield was 5.220%.

The yield on two-year treasury bonds, which is very dependent on the policies of the Federal Reserve, also fell. Reduced yields may be favourable for stocks because it lowers the discount rate on projected earnings of firms.

US Stock Market Today: US Jobs Growth Slows More Than Expectations

According to the report on employment for September, non-farm payrolls rose by only 29,000, which is after an August increase in payrolls by 133,000 that was subsequently revised downwards. The unemployment rate edged up to 4.2%.

The expectations were for 90,000 job gains, which according to Reuters survey of economists, had been expected from the supplied report and yet another market summary pointed out the expectations at 84,000. The lower figures made the investors take a fresh look at the strength of the economy.

US Stock Market Today: What Investors Should Watch Next

Investors will be assessing several developments in the coming sessions:

  • Federal Reserve commentary: Any signals about interest rates and inflation could influence bond yields and equity valuations.
  • Upcoming employment data: Further payroll figures may clarify whether September’s slowdown was temporary.
  • Inflation indicators: Price pressures remain central to the outlook for monetary policy.
  • Nvidia earnings and guidance: Updates on artificial intelligence spending and semiconductor demand could affect technology stocks.
  • Nike’s business outlook: Investors may look for evidence of improving sales, particularly in China.
  • Oil prices: Supply disruptions, geopolitical tensions and potential reserve releases could move energy markets.
  • Corporate earnings: Revenue forecasts and profit margins may determine whether the rally broadens beyond large technology companies.

The key question is whether lower yields and stronger technology shares can sustain the market advance while economic growth remains uncertain.
